Health insurance sign-up season is almost here. You don't have to figure it out alone.

Before you choose a plan, ask:

โœ”๏ธ Does this plan cover my visits at Sandhills Medical?
โœ”๏ธ Are my medicines covered?
โœ”๏ธ What will I really pay, not just each month, but when I need care?

Plans can change from year to year, so take a fresh look even if you liked the one you have.

๐Ÿ“… Medicare: October 15 to December 7
๐Ÿ“… HealthCare.gov: November 1 to January 15 (sign up by December 15 for coverage starting January 1)
๐Ÿ“… Medicaid: apply any time

Not sure where to start? Call us. We'll walk through your options with you and help you compare what fits you and your family.

Free help is also available any time at 1-800-318-2596 for HealthCare.gov plans and 1-800-633-4227 for Medicare.

With or without insurance, you always have a place at Sandhills Medical.

Everyone feels anxious sometimes. But when does anxiety become something you should talk about with your healthcare provider?

Consider reaching out if anxiety:

- Is happening frequently or feels difficult to control
- Is interfering with work, school, relationships or everyday activities
- Makes it difficult to sleep
- Causes you to avoid things you normally enjoy
- Comes with physical symptoms like a racing heart, muscle tension or stomach problems
- Has become noticeably different or more intense than usual

You don't have to wait until anxiety feels overwhelming to bring it up.

Your primary care provider can listen, help you understand what you're experiencing and talk with you about what kinds of support may be appropriate.

Taking care of your mental health is part of taking care of your health.

Have you been scrolling for a while? Take a moment to assess how your neck feels.

Holding your head and neck in a bent position for long periods can fatigue the muscles that support your head and contribute to neck and shoulder discomfortโ€”a condition known as "tech neck."

A few simple changes can make screen time easier on your body:

๐Ÿ“ฑ Bring your phone up. Hold it closer to eye level instead of looking down into your lap.

๐Ÿ’ป Raise your screen. Your computer monitor should be directly in front of you, with the top of the screen at or just below eye level.

๐Ÿช‘ Support your body. Keep your back and feet supported and relax your shoulders.

๐Ÿ”„ Change positions. Don't stay in one posture. Get up, move around and give your neck and shoulders a break.

October is National Chiropractic Health Month, and this year's theme is "Joint Efforts"โ€”a reminder that taking care of your musculoskeletal health is part of staying active and doing the things you enjoy.

When's the best time to get your flu shot? There's real science behind the answer.

After a flu shot, your body needs about two weeks to build its defenses. If you wait until the flu is already going around your child's school or your workplace, you could be unprotected during those two weeks.

Protection also fades a little over the months, especially for older adults. That's why a shot in August may not last all the way through winter.

In South Carolina, the flu usually peaks between December and February. Getting your shot in September or October means you're fully protected before the flu arrives and still protected when it's at its worst.

๐Ÿ“… Best window: now through the end of October
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง Who needs it: everyone 6 months and older
๐Ÿ‘ต 65 and up: ask about a higher-strength flu shot made for older adults

High blood pressure usually doesn't come with warning signs, which is why so many people don't know they have it.

A normal reading is less than 120 over 80. If your top number is 120 to 129, that's considered elevated and a good reason to talk with your doctor. If you don't know your numbers, a quick check at one of our clinics is an easy place to start.

If you're already managing high blood pressure, our care teams are here to help you stay on track.

ICYMI, this school year Kershaw County School District is partnering with Sandhills Medical to provide in-school medical care and counseling services to students, faculty and staff at 12 district schools.

We believe kids do better when help is easy to reach. This new program ensures kids can get the care they need without missing a day of school or an adult missing a day of work.

For more information, check out the details of the program at the information page on our website. There youโ€™ll find a list of participating schools, available services, answers to common questions, and how to get started.

We wish everyone a safe and healthy school year!

When it comes to supporting the health of our neighbors, Sandhills Medical is not alone. Weโ€™re proud to partner with the Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County, a local free clinic that cares for those without health insurance.

Huge thank you to CMC CEO Charlotte Rankin for sharing more about our work together in this column for the Chronicle-Independent. As Charlotte wrote, Kershaw County is healthier and stronger because of partnerships like this.
