If you’re rolling your eyes thinking “saying these things would never work for me,” that’s exactly how my clients felt before we started working together.

Because they were:
- Under fueled (most had no idea, and this was a shock to them)
- Stuck in an all-or-nothing mentality (I already messed up by eating a brownie, so might as well keep eating and start over tomorrow)
- Disconnected with hunger/fullness so they couldn’t trust themselves around these foods.

Once we fixed these things, these phrases became the exact things they needed to say to themselves to finally stop mindlessly overeating sweets and treats.

And they use these phrases to this day because sometimes you do need a little reminder to yourself.

Inside my mini podcast series “Quiet the Food Noise” I share the exact steps you need to take to finally stop obsessing and feel in control around all foods so you can actually enjoy one brownie when you really want it (or pass when you don’t) and move on with your day.

If you’ve ever thought “my kids would never eat fish,” this one’s for you.

I’ve worked hard to help my boys learn to accept (and even love) fish, because it’s so nutritious, easy to cook, and versatile. Plus, it’s one of my favorite proteins.

And I know getting your kids to eat fish can feel like a total alternate universe. Between picky eating, not knowing how to cook it, and bracing for a dinner nobody touches, it’s no wonder fewer than 8% of kids eat the recommended two servings a week.

Here’s what helped us: starting with the right fish.

Wild Alaska Sole (aka flounder) was one of the first fish my kids learned to eat. It’s mild, has a kid-friendly texture, and pairs well with foods they already love, like butter, pasta, tacos, and quesadillas.

And yes…one of them prefers to dip it in jarred marinara sauce. We still consider this a win!

It also checks a lot of boxes for me as a mom and a dietitian. Flounder is packed with protein, the omega-3s EPA/DHA (which most kids don’t get enough of), B12, and selenium, is low in mercury, and it cooks in minutes on busy weeknights.

It’s the perfect first fish for kids.

Yes, even your picky eater. You just need a good starting point and a little patience.

Yes, protein at breakfast can be helpful for kids and adults.

But we’ve developed an obsession with protein, and it’s because a distraction for many parents.

Most kids don’t need as much protein as you might think, and they can easily meet their needs even if they skip protein at breakfast.

So instead of micromanaging one meal, zoom out and look at what your kid is eating over a day or week.

Make sure protein foods they like are available at breakfast, and then let it go.

Because pressure almost always backfires. It creates more resistance in the moment and can hurt their relationship with food long term.

Now, if you’re worried about your child’s nutrition, I can help.

Maybe you’re concerned they’re not eating enough nutritious foods or they’re eating too much of the not-so-nutritious stuff.

I’ll assess what they’re eating so you know if your anxiety is actually well founded (and if it is, I’ll give you exactly what we need to do to close nutrient gaps that will work for your kid).

But most of the time, we have some breathing room to focus on the strategies that will, over time, help your kid expand variety without pressure, bribing, or power struggles at the breakfast or dinner table.

Raising kids who eat balanced meals while instilling a healthy relationship to all foods is less about what you say and more about what you do.

You don’t need to “teach” them in the traditional way by talking about protein or other macros (it’s usually unhelpful and may even be harmful).

Talking to kids about food and what it does in your body can be fun for the curious kid, and helpful for them to understand how your body works (in an age appropriate way), but it’s unlikely to change how they eat.

Instead, serve balanced meals (even if they don’t eat all of the components) and model balanced eating.

Want more tips on how to raise balanced eaters (including ending picky eating) while also helping them cultivate a healthy relationship to food?

Breakfast on school mornings just got a whole lot easier (and more nutritious) for you and your kids.

Comment ‘OAT FLOUR’ for the full recipe + 5 more flavors for your weekly rotation.

Made with nutritious ingredients, including NOW Foods oat flour and chia seeds plus Greek yogurt and avocado oil, and sweetened juuuuust enough for my kids to keep coming back for 2nds or 3rds, without a big blood sugar spike for any of us, these oat flour muffins are a breakfast you can feel great about feeding the whole family.

They’re perfect for weekend meal prep and freeze well if you want to store for later.

But honestly, they will get eaten so quickly, you might even want to make a double batch so you have enough for the whole week.

Grab the ingredients at nowfoods.com and save 20% on your entire order with the code SARAH20, good through 11/30/26.

Sitting down to dinner shouldn’t feel like prepping for battle.

But if you’re spending your meals begging your kids to “just try one bite” and tracking every vegetable that goes in (or doesn’t)... then you already know how exhausting meals can be.

Here’s what I wish more parents knew if they wanted to stop butting heads with their 6-year old every night:

Your job was never to get your kid to eat.

It’s to offer the food.

What they do with it is up to them.

That one small change in how you think about your role, when it comes to food, is what turns the dinner table from a nightly power struggle into a place your family actually wants to be.

No more short-order cooking.

No more meltdowns over trying their broccoli.

Just food on the table, and trust being built one meal at a time.

Inside Nourished Kids, Confident Moms, we build out exactly what this would look like for your family.

I give you the scripts, the strategy, and the support to make peaceful meals your new normal.

Comment KIDS below and I’ll send you the details.
