Caitlin Skulitz, RN, BSN at Children's Specialized Hospital's New Brunswick inpatient facility explains the benefits of having just one of the new pieces of equipment the grant provided: "The AccuVein has not only helped nurses like myself become more confident in my phlebotomy skills but has also benefited the patients tremendously. This device allows for an easier view of patients' veins for a more successful blood draw with minimal stick attempts. From a nursing standpoint, the AccuVein has been one of, if not the best addition to the unit this year."

The Liberty University School of Nursing (LUSON) department has added a new device called the Accu-Vein Illuminator in their efforts to provide excellent and cutting edge technology for their students. The Accu-Vein Illuminator allows students to visualize deep veins that cannot be readily felt prior to intravenous (IV) initiation. Thousands of hospitals around the world have implemented the Accu-Vein Illuminator due to the complexities and potential complications associated with IV therapies such as risk for infection and pain. The Illuminator is being utilized during LUSON simulation sessions while students practice initiating IV’s on high fidelity manikins. LUSON adheres to the Virginia Board of Nursing (VBON) guidelines of utilizing manikins for initial IV practice prior to having the opportunity to start IVs in the clinical setting. LUSON is the first school of nursing world-wide to introduce this technology to students. LUSON faculty members, Dr. Jerry Harvey, Mrs. Carol Harvey and Mrs. Dena Todd were the recipients of the LU Illuminate Grant awarded by the Centers for Excellence which provided the opportunity to purchase the device.
