You felt grounded in the morning when you practiced meditation. Five minutes into checking work emails it’s out the door.
How do we sustain mindfulness, or return to it, throughout the day?
The first foundation of mindfulness is mindfulness of the body.
Our body is always with us.
It can anchor us in the present moment when we place our attention on the body.
It is simple- but not always easy. These instructions are direct from the Buddha.
When you are sitting, know you are sitting.
When you are walking, know you are walking.
When you are washing the dishes, know you are washing the dishes.
Let’s take the last example. We can strengthen our mindfulness muscles and our ability not to get carried away in thoughts or worries while doing a potentially mindless task like dishes by:
- Tuning into the feeling of water on our hands
- Feeling feet on the ground
-Noticing our breathing while we wash dishes
- Recognizing how the world and earth provide for us with food, that we just ate.
This will strengthen your connection to home base, to that home inside yourself. Even if you pay attention for 1 minute out of a 10 minute dish session.
After all, this practice is about repetition. Slowly, over time, we see change that makes us happier. With practice, the qualities of ease and grounded-ness transition from temporary states to embodied traits.
