"It's only 10 mg. I would put my own kids on it. It's the safest drug out there."
That's what London's mother says a psychiatrist told her. London was 12.
I sat down with her mom to hear what happened.
She says London had struggled with depression, and her mom was trying counseling and vitamins first. During an inpatient stay, she says the staff kept pushing Prozac and implied London needed to be on something before she could go home.
She agreed. She says nobody told her about the boxed warning. She only learned about it months after London died, when she found a "verbal consent" signed in her name in the records. She says the dose was doubled to 20 mg within 3 days without anyone calling her.
Three weeks to the day after starting, London died after taking an overdose. Her mom says that night it was like she was looking right through her daughter. Like she was numb.
Here's what I want every parent to know: Prozac carries a boxed warning because it doubles the risk of su***de in young people. That should be part of every conversation before a child starts it.
Her mom's message: ask more questions. Look at sleep, diet, screen time and trauma first. Read the forms.
