PART 4 OF 4 🌿 — CREATING A CALMING SPACE

What if having some time alone wasn't a punishment?

What if we taught our children that it's okay to choose some quiet when they need it?

A calming space can give children somewhere to go when they feel overwhelmed, frustrated, angry, or simply need a break from everything around them.

The important part is that we aren't sending them there.

We're teaching them how to recognize when they need some space — and empowering them to use it.

Being alone can be a healthy way to calm your body, collect your thoughts, and reconnect with yourself.

Alone doesn't have to mean lonely.

We can teach children that it's okay to step away for a little while:

I can take some quiet time.
I can calm my body.
And when I'm ready, I can come back.

This isn't about punishment or isolation.

It's about giving children a tool they can eventually learn to recognize and use for themselves.

And that's a skill that can grow with them — long after the tantrum years are over.

🌿 This is Part 4, the final video in the series. If you missed Parts 1–3, go back and work through the series.

PART 3 OF 4 🌿 — THE PRACTICAL PART

We've talked about behavior as communication. We've talked about the way time-out can miss the skill a child actually needs.

So what do you actually do when your child is in the middle of a tantrum?

Start with yourself.

When your child's emotions are big, it's easy for your own emotions to rise right along with them.

Instead of telling your child to calm down, try letting them see and hear you calming your own body.

Take some slow, deep breaths — and make them noticeable. You don't have to hide the fact that you're using your own calming tool.

You're showing your child what it looks and sounds like to slow down and regulate.

This isn't about giving in to a tantrum or removing boundaries.

It's about staying regulated enough to stay connected and help your child through the moment.

You don't have to fix the feeling.
You don't have to have the perfect words.
You don't have to make the tantrum disappear.

Sometimes, the most helpful thing you can do is model the skill you're hoping your child will learn.

🌿 Save this one. You may need it.

PART 2 OF 4 🌿

Many of us grew up with time-out as the standard response to difficult behavior.

But here's something worth considering:

What is the child learning while they're sitting there?

If the child is already overwhelmed, angry, frustrated, or unable to regulate, removing them from the situation may stop the behavior temporarily — but it doesn't necessarily teach the skill they were missing in the first place.

I'm not suggesting that children don't need boundaries or that parents should simply allow difficult behavior.

I'm asking us to look at the purpose behind the response.

Are we trying to punish the behavior?

Or are we trying to help a child learn what to do when big emotions take over?

Tomorrow is Part 3 — and this is where we get practical.

PART 1 OF 4 🌿

What if your child's behavior is communication?

When children are overwhelmed, frustrated, tired, anxious, or struggling with something they don't yet know how to express, their behavior may be the way they communicate it.

That doesn't mean we ignore difficult behavior or let children do whatever they want.

It means we can pause long enough to ask:

What is this behavior telling me?

That one question can change the way we respond.

This week I'm sharing a four-part series about behavior, time-outs, tantrums, and what we can do instead.

We'll start with understanding the behavior — and by Part 3, we'll get to a practical tool you can actually use during a tantrum.

🌿 Start here, and follow along this week.

Take the first bite and just hold it on your tongue. Imagine how special it tastes. That's called savoring, when you really pay attention and enjoy.

🐛Savoring is a powerful mindfulness practice that teaches kids to slow down their sensory input and focus entirely on the present moment.

🌿 **Imagine a world where…**

Imagine children going to school without fear of being bullied. A world without school shootings or homicides. A world where fewer teens struggle alone with thoughts of su***de.

Imagine families who know how to face difficult times, navigate complex emotions, and work through challenges together.

That is the world I want to help create.

Throughout my career as a music therapist, I've seen the impact that music, mindfulness, and supportive techniques can have on individuals and families. I also believe deeply in the importance of helping children develop emotional skills early—before life's hardest moments arrive.

Quiet Time Meditations grew from that experience, that vision, and a spiritual guidance that has been part of this project every step of the way. I truly believe this program can serve families and contribute to a better world.

We may never know the full impact of helping a child learn to understand their emotions, find calm, or reach out for support. But I believe those small moments matter.

💚 **What kind of world do you hope we can create for our children?**

We are each completely unique, multi-dimensional, and multi-faceted—just like these 🫣 hydrangeas 🫣 (or rhododendrons, depending on how fast my brain is moving!). 🌸

✨The truth is, crisis happens to all of us in different ways. It is absolutely vital to find the specific wellness practices that work for you before the storm hits.

I love sharing the tools I deeply wish I had known when I was younger. They would have helped me navigate my hardest seasons so much better.

Your kids are changing fast. And with all that growth comes a lot of thoughts, feelings, questions, and big emotions. 🌱

Sometimes the hardest part of parenting is knowing what to do with all of it.

A calming routine can give children a chance to slow down, notice what they're feeling, and practice skills that can help them navigate those bigger moments.

That’s part of what inspired Quiet Time Meditations — using nature, music, imagination, and guided meditation to help children learn about themselves while creating a little more calm in the day.

You don't have to wait until things are difficult to begin practicing these skills.

🌿 Because there are no do-overs in parenting. But we can do better.

Take a very deep breath and step into the quiet, rhythmic strength of the ocean.
Filmed right at the edge of the sea at Cardiff near Encinitas, California, this visualization is a simple, deliberate space for your nervous system to find its footing.
As you watch the waves approach and feel the sand shift beneath your feet, let this natural movement help you soften, let go, and gently release the weight of grief or pain.
I went out to the edge of the sea
And breathed
And asked the waves to take from me
The grief and pain
That have consumed me
And I breathed
And felt the sand shift beneath my feet
And felt the wind caressing me
I went out to the edge of the sea
And breathed
And asked the waves to bring to me
The peace love and joy
That have eluded me
And I breathed
And felt the sand shift beneath my feet
And felt the wind caressing me
I looked out to where the sky meets the sea
And breathed
And watched the big waves dancing
And asked Mother Gaia
What is it you desire of me?
And I breathed
And felt the sand shift beneath my feet
And felt the wind caressing me
And I breathed

This peaceful meditation featuring the instrumental soundtrack from the Quiet Time Meditations Family Learning Program - Sea Turtle is layered with an ocean drum, a steady heartbeat rhythm, and grounding acoustic guitar. It is designed to help parents, children, and individuals establish a predictable baseline of calm.
