💙 **81 Years of Progress. Still More Work to Do.**

October marks the 81st anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM).

For 81 years, we've recognized the talents, contributions, and achievements of people with disabilities in the American workforce.

We've come a long way, but there's still work to be done.

Having a disability should never mean having fewer opportunities to build a career, contribute your skills, or be part of a team.

**Inclusion isn't just about opening doors. It's about making sure everyone has a fair opportunity to succeed once they're inside.**

This month, let's celebrate the progress, recognize the people making a difference, and keep working toward workplaces where everyone belongs.

💬 **What is one thing employers can do today to make their workplaces more inclusive?**

💔 A heartbreaking story out of Reading, Massachusetts.

As the community mourns the tragic loss of Andria Hanafin, a woman who dedicated much of her life to caring for animals, the MSPCA is now looking after 84 cats recovered from her home.

These cats need medical attention, care, and eventually loving homes.

Our hearts go out to Andria's family, friends, and everyone affected by this tragedy. ❤️

A special thank you to the MSPCA team for stepping in during such a difficult time.

🐾 **Want to help?** Consider donating, fostering, or adopting when the cats are ready. Even sharing their story can make a difference.

Today, October 13, marks World Thrombosis Day. Thrombosis occurs when blood clots block veins or arteries, leading to DVT, strokes, or heart attacks. Understanding these risks is vital for accessibility and equality in healthcare. 🩺

Watch for signs:
swelling or redness in one leg (DVT)
sudden chest pain and shortness of breath (PE).
Prevention is key—stay hydrated, keep moving, and discuss risk factors with your doctor.

For many people with disabilities, being able to live in their own home and be part of their community isn’t just a preference. It’s a civil rights issue.

For more than 25 years, the *Olmstead* decision has helped protect the right of people with disabilities to receive services in community settings rather than being unnecessarily placed in institutions. The federal government is now stepping back from some of its enforcement of those protections.

This is worth paying attention to because these decisions affect real choices about where people live, how they receive care, and how much independence they can have.

Lois Curtis and Elaine Wilson won a victory that gave people with disabilities the freedom to choose where they live. That legacy is now under threat.

Good news for Haverhill — the Farmers Market is planning to keep things going through the winter. 🥕🍞

Starting in November, the market will move indoors to the Historic New England Center downtown, giving local vendors and the community a place to stay connected even after the summer season ends. Nearly all of the current vendors are expected to take part.

A nice win for local businesses, downtown Haverhill, and anyone who loves supporting local.

During "Sensory Day" at the Topsfield Fair, a North Shore mother and her 6-year-old autistic son had to leave after 25 minutes when staff repeatedly refused to let him ride without wearing his wristband—triggering a meltdown due to his sensory processing needs.

The fair's policy actually permits parents to wear or hold the wristbands, but front-line workers weren't following it. Topsfield Fair officials and Fiesta Shows have apologized, stating they "fell short" and reaching out to make amends.

Every child deserves a fair shot at having fun. Inclusion isn't just a label on an event—it’s how staff treat families when challenges arise.

💡 Massachusetts Residents: Relief is on the way for your winter energy bills!

Gov. Maura Healey has declared a state of energy emergency and issued new executive actions aimed at saving Bay Staters nearly $150 million this winter.

Key details for MA households:
⚡ Electric Bill Savings: The state is temporarily eliminating the SMART program charge from residential electric bills for three months (Jan–March) and cutting the Alternative Energy Portfolio Standard requirement in half.
🔥 Heating Oil Assistance: Middle-class families earning up to $171,749 (for a family of four) can now qualify for up to $680 in home heating oil assistance.
💰 Increased HEAP Funding: Low-income households receiving HEAP will see a 15–20% boost in winter heating assistance.

Check eligibility and apply for heating assistance programs at mass.gov/heatinghelp.
