About the Advocacy Network with Disabilities

THE ADVOCACY NETWORK ON DISABILITIES champions the rights of individuals with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities by promoting inclusion, providing services, and advancing systems change. Long before โ€œcollaborationโ€ and โ€œpartneringโ€ were buzz words, these principles were the foundation upon which The Advocacy Network on Disabilities was founded. Since its beginnings as a subcommittee of South Florida's Health Planning Council in the early 1970s, The Advocacy Network on Disabilities has been a coalition of individuals with disabilities; family members; advocates; community service providers; and other public, private and governmental organizations. With an original focus on individuals with developmental disabilities, today the organization also provides supports and services to individuals with physical, sensory and other disabilities. Our mission is simple: โ€œIn partnership with people with disabilities and their families, The Advocacy Network on Disabilities advocates, coordinates and provides supports and services.โ€

Through facilitating community collaboration, fostering self-advocacy, and promoting acceptance, The Advocacy Network on Disabilities goals include:

1) Helping individuals identify and access supports and services;

2) Bringing unmet needs to the attention of decision-makers and advocating for change;

3) Providing expertise about best practices and specialized resources; and

4) Conducting outreach, education, and professional development activities. The Advocacy Network on Disabilities has a proven track record of excellence. Since 1975, its funders have continuously found the organization in compliance with both programmatic and administrative contract requirements. Consumer Satisfaction Surveys indicate that 96% of respondents are satisfied with the help they receive from us.

Today is Disability Mentoring Day! ๐ŸŒŸ

A good mentor can open doors. They share what a job is really like, help you build skills, and believe in what you can do.

Disability Mentoring Day connects students and job seekers with disabilities to mentors, job shadowing, and real career experience. Itโ€™s part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and this yearโ€™s theme is โ€œCelebrating Value and Talent.โ€

Disabled workers bring talent and fresh ideas to every workplace. Mentoring helps make sure that talent gets seen.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Who was a mentor for you? Tag them below and say thanks!

Not every disability can be seen. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š

This is Invisible Disabilities Week. Many people live with disabilities you canโ€™t see, like chronic pain, fatigue, brain injuries, learning disabilities, mental health conditions, or hearing and vision loss.

โ€œBut you look fineโ€ can hurt. Someoneโ€™s needs are real even when you canโ€™t see them.

How you can help this week:
โœ”๏ธ Believe people when they tell you what they need
โœ”๏ธ Donโ€™t ask someone to prove their disability
โœ”๏ธ Offer flexibility at work, at school, and in the community
โœ”๏ธ Remember that a disability can look different from day to day

At Advocacy Network on Disabilities, weโ€™re working for a world where everyone belongs, including people whose disabilities arenโ€™t visible.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š Today, our President and CEO, Lianie Cuba, joined Miami-Dade County Commissioner Raquel Regalado and community leaders for โ€œNeuroinclusion at Work: Employers Who Get It,โ€ a webinar on opening more job opportunities for neurodivergent people.

Lianie shared that inclusion doesnโ€™t always take big changes. Clear instructions, sensory-friendly spaces, and peer support can make a real difference. She also talked about how our training, ADA guidance, advocacy, and success coaching help people with disabilities find jobs, plan for adulthood, and connect with resources.

Thank you to Commissioner Regalado, ChamberSouth, and CareerSource South Florida for joining the conversation. Inclusion takes action, and everyone deserves the chance to succeed. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Today is World Mental Health Day. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š

Mental health affects how we think, feel, work, and connect with others. Anyone can struggle, and no one should have to face it alone.

Asking for help is a normal part of taking care of yourself. Check in on the people around you, listen without judgment, and make it easier for others to reach out.

If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7 in the U.S.

Today is World Cerebral Palsy Day! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š
Today, we celebrate people with cerebral palsy and the many ways they contribute to our families, workplaces, schools, and communities.
Inclusion means ensuring people with cerebral palsy have access, opportunity, choice, and the support they need to participate fully in community life.
Together, we can continue breaking down barriers and building a world where every person belongs.
