WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Mackenzie Murphy edition! 💛
Mackenzie was just 2 years old when she was diagnosed with Pre-B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) on August 24, 2019. She underwent more than two years of treatment, and her journey came with some incredibly difficult complications, including MRSA, osteomyelitis following a bone marrow aspiration, extended inpatient stays, and, near the end of treatment, an infiltrated IV that caused severe second-degree burns to her foot and leg. Mackenzie endured so much before finally completing treatment on October 19, 2021, and ringing that bell on February 23, 2022! 🔔🎉
Today, Mackenzie, or Mack as her family calls her, is a healthy, active, and very social 9-year-old in fourth grade, who's also VERY excited to finally attend the same school as her 12-year-old big brother, Trey!
Mack participates in recreational cheerleading, plays adaptive soccer and loves to swim. She also enjoys drawing and painting and hopes to return to dance or gymnastics. Her family would love to get her involved in theater too, because this kiddo loves to perform and somehow memorizes all the lines from her favorite shows! 📣⚽🎨🎭
Although active treatment has ended, Mackenzie still has one final visit with her treating oncologist at Hackensack Hospital, along with routine bloodwork, before transitioning fully to the Care & Beyond Survivorship Program. She will then meet with the survivorship oncology team once a year and undergo more extensive bloodwork. Overall, Mack is healthy and doing extremely well. Her family continues to monitor occasional minor health concerns and complete the recommended screenings, since it can sometimes be difficult to know whether something is related to Down syndrome or a possible late effect of cancer treatment.
Through it all, Mackenzie has grown into a funny, determined, and incredibly social kiddo with a huge personality. She delivers one-liners that keep her family laughing and seems to assume that everyone she meets is simply a future friend. She can certainly be strong-willed, but that same determination carried her through so much. Cancer is part of Mackenzie’s story, but it does not define her.
On October 19, Mackenzie will celebrate FIVE YEARS since completing treatment! These days, the Murphy family’s life is filled with school, sports, activities, family time and watching Mackenzie and Trey grow into their own personalities. After everything they experienced during treatment, those ordinary moments feel pretty extraordinary.
Mackenzie, seeing you healthy, happy, making friends, and sharing that enormous personality with the world is exactly why we created this series. We could not be happier to see where you are now, and we cannot wait to watch what you do next! 💛
