☕ Happy National Coffee Day! ☕
Ever wonder why that first cup of coffee makes you feel more awake?
Coffee works primarily through caffeine, which blocks a neurotransmitter called adenosine. Adenosine gradually accumulates in your brain throughout the day, creating what we call sleep pressure—that increasingly sleepy feeling that tells your body it's time to rest.
Caffeine temporarily blocks adenosine receptors, preventing your brain from receiving those sleepy signals. It doesn't actually eliminate fatigue; it simply masks it!
But did you know that WHEN you drink your coffee may matter, too?
Your body naturally produces a surge of cortisol shortly after waking, known as the cortisol awakening response. Cortisol helps promote alertness and prepares your body for the day ahead.
☀️ Consider waiting 60–90 minutes after waking before reaching for your first cup of coffee. This allows your body's natural morning alertness response to do its thing before introducing caffeine.
There isn't strong evidence that drinking coffee immediately upon waking disrupts your cortisol rhythm or that everyone benefits from waiting. However, experimenting with a later first cup may help you better understand your natural energy patterns.
And remember, caffeine has a half-life of approximately 4–6 hours, so that afternoon pick-me-up may still be hanging around when you're trying to fall asleep!
Enjoy your coffee, understand your biology, and remember that caffeine is no substitute for quality sleep! 🤎
