The word “diet” has gotten complicated. 🙃

Sometimes it simply means the foods and beverages someone regularly consumes.

Sometimes it refers to a therapeutic nutrition intervention.

Sometimes it means intentional weight-loss restriction.

And sometimes “diet” is shorthand for a rigid set of rules that has very little to do with nourishment and a lot to do with fear, control, or body image.

These aren’t interchangeable.

The FAO and WHO’s definition of a healthy diet is actually much broader than the way “healthy diet” is often portrayed online. They identify four core principles: adequacy, balance, moderation and diversity, with food safety as an essential component. They also emphasize that healthy diets can look different across individuals, cultures and contexts.

So the next time someone says, “I’m going on a diet,” it may be worth asking:

“What do you mean by diet?”

Because the answer matters. 🫶🏻

⬇️ Save this for the next time the word “diet” gets confusing.

Fresh food hits different when it’s local.

Richmond has no shortage of places to find seasonal produce—you just have to know where to look.
From farmers markets and neighborhood grocers to pick-your-own farms, there are so many ways to eat with the season and support Virginia farmers at the same time.
It’s not about doing it perfectly—it’s about choosing local when you can and noticing how much better food tastes when it’s closer to its source.

Fiber isn’t just one thing—it’s a whole cast of characters!

Soluble fiber absorbs water and forms a gel-like texture that can support cholesterol, blood sugar regulation, and gut health.

Insoluble fiber adds bulk and helps food move through the digestive tract.

The good news? You don’t need to memorize which foods contain which type. Focusing on a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds will naturally help you get both!

As a dietitian - and as a parent - these are the messages I hope my children carry with them long after they’ve left my table.

Not food rules.
Not calorie math.
Not fear or anxiety.

Just the understanding that food is meant to nourish, connect, and be enjoyed.

Because a healthy relationship with food may be one of the most important things we can pass on to the next generation. 💜

Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) is now Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS).

Published this month in The Lancet, a landmark global consensus — involving 56 organizations and over 14,000 patients and health professionals worldwide — has officially renamed this condition affecting 1 in 8 women.

Why the change?

The old name implied ovarian “cysts,” which are actually arrested follicles — not true cysts.

It narrowly framed a multisystem condition as a gynecological problem.

This contributed to delayed diagnosis, fragmented care, stigma, and underfunding of research.

What does PMOS capture that PCOS didn’t?

Polyendocrine → Reflects the hormonal complexity (hyperandrogenism, insulin resistance, and more)

Metabolic → Recognizes the metabolic burden (type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular risk, dyslipidemia)

Ovarian → Acknowledges ovarian dysfunction without implying cysts

The diagnostic criteria remain the same. The name change is about accuracy, not reclassification.

A global implementation strategy — including a transition period, education, and alignment with health systems and disease classification — is finally underway!

Your body needs consistent energy to:
• Improve performance (yes, even your routine workouts)
• Support recovery + reduce injury risk
• Maintain focus + endurance
• Keep hormones + metabolism functioning optimally

Skipping meals, under-fueling, or “earning” food can actually HURT your performance - not help it.

Want support building a fueling routine that works for YOU? We’re here to help - reach out to book a session today 💥

Your body doesn’t need perfection - it needs steadiness, care, and support.
