💪🔥 I WANT TO AGE LIKE SHELLEY! AGE UP, NOT OUT!

I’ve taken it upon myself to research where the term “senior citizen” 👵👴 came from.

The term became popular around the 1930s as a more respectful way to describe older adults, replacing words like “the elderly” and “the aged.”

That was the 1930s. THIS IS 2026!

When I hear “senior citizen,” I think about how society often portrays aging: cognitive decline, muscle loss, chronic illness, medications, and losing independence.

WHO DECIDED THAT’S HOW WE’RE SUPPOSED TO AGE?

👵👴 Senior citizen is NOT a medical diagnosis. It’s a social classification!

Personally, I will NEVER define myself as a senior citizen, and I damn sure won’t take a senior citizen discount! 😂

Not because there’s anything wrong with taking one, but because I refuse to let society define my capabilities by my age!

🧠 Being 55, 65, 75, or 85 does NOT automatically mean you’re weak, cognitively impaired, or metabolically unhealthy.

Your chronological age does NOT determine your physical strength, cognitive health, or independence!

💪 As a functional medicine practitioner, I teach people to BUILD MUSCLE, protect their brains, support metabolic health, and maintain independence.

And when I look at Shelley Smith, I think, THAT’S HOW I WANT TO AGE! ❤️

Strong. Confident. Active. Independent. Still building muscle and living life on HER terms!

I want to carry my own groceries, lift my own suitcase into an airplane, travel, exercise, and remain independent for as long as possible!

🔥 I’M NOT GOING TO AGE OUT. I’M GOING TO AGE UP!

Aging is inevitable. But giving up on your strength and independence doesn’t have to be!

Shelley, you’re an inspiration! 💪❤️

👇 WHAT ABOUT YOU? ARE YOU AGING UP OR AGING OUT?

Drop a 💪 in the comments if you refuse to let your birth certificate determine your capabilities!

🖊️🔥 DON’T EVER LET SOMEONE TAKE YOUR F*CKING PEN AND WRITE YOUR STORY!YOUR LIFE. YOUR JOURNEY. YOUR HEALING. YOUR STORY....

🖊️🔥 DON’T EVER LET SOMEONE TAKE YOUR F*CKING PEN AND WRITE YOUR STORY!

YOUR LIFE. YOUR JOURNEY. YOUR HEALING. YOUR STORY.

As a functional medicine practitioner who has dedicated years to pursuing my PhD, there is a very personal backstory behind WHY I chose this path. One day, I will publicly share that story.

But today, I want to talk about something that goes far beyond education, credentials, or professional accomplishments.

❤️‍🩹 HEALING ISN’T JUST PHYSICAL.

I work with men and women who are trying to heal physically, mentally, and emotionally.

People carrying childhood trauma, relationship stress, family stress, workplace stress, financial pressures, and emotional exhaustion.

People who have spent years putting everyone else’s needs before their own.

And here’s something I’ve learned through both education and personal experience:

🧠 Chronic stress and trauma don’t just affect your emotions. They can affect your nervous system, hormones, digestion, immune function, sleep, and metabolic health.

Healing involves more than addressing laboratory markers. It also means recognizing what a person has lived through and how those experiences may affect their health today.

🔥 BUT LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING!

Don’t EVER let someone take your pen and write your story according to THEIR expectations!

Don’t allow people who haven’t walked your path, fought your battles, or made your sacrifices to dictate the direction of your life.

Don’t let someone else’s limitations become YOUR limitations.

And don’t ever let anyone stomp out the fire inside you because they don’t understand your purpose!

💪 TAKE IT FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS HAD TO OUTLIVE THE STATISTICS.

Statistics have a way of labeling people based on their childhood, circumstances, trauma, and life experiences.

And while statistics serve a purpose in science, they do NOT determine an individual’s destiny.

If I had allowed statistics, circumstances, or other people’s opinions to define who I was supposed to become, I would NEVER be where I am today.

I refused to let my past write my ending.

And I want you to understand that YOU CAN CHANGE THE DIRECTION OF YOUR STORY, TOO!

You cannot rewrite yesterday, but you absolutely have a say in what happens tomorrow.

🌱 HEALING DOESN’T MEAN LIFE WILL NEVER KNOCK YOU DOWN AGAIN.

Sometimes life is going to kick your can right down the road!

Sometimes people will disappoint you, criticize you, underestimate you, or try to convince you that you’re incapable of achieving your goals.

PICK YOURSELF BACK UP ANYWAY!

Dust yourself off. Straighten your shoulders. Hold your head high. And KEEP MARCHING FORWARD!

❤️ TO EVERY MAN AND WOMAN WORKING TO HEAL:

Whether you’re rebuilding your physical health, recovering from trauma, finding emotional stability, pursuing an education, or simply trying to become a stronger version of yourself…

YOU DO NOT NEED SOMEONE ELSE’S PERMISSION TO GROW!

You are allowed to change.

You are allowed to establish boundaries.

You are allowed to outgrow circumstances, relationships, and expectations that no longer support your well-being.

And you are absolutely allowed to become someone the statistics never predicted!

🔥 SO HERE’S MY MESSAGE:

Stay in your lane.
Stay the course.
Keep fighting the good fight.
Hold your head high.
Put your shoulders back.
And MARCH FORWARD!

Let people talk. Let them underestimate you.

JUST DON’T HAND THEM YOUR PEN! 🖊️

Because when you finally reach that goal and look back at everything you’ve overcome, you’ll realize something:

The greatest victory wasn’t proving everybody else wrong. It was refusing to give up on YOURSELF.

🖊️ YOUR PEN.
❤️ YOUR HEALING.
💪 YOUR STRENGTH.
🔥 YOUR PURPOSE.
📖 YOUR DAMN STORY.

NOW GO WRITE A CHAPTER YOU’LL BE PROUD OF!

🧬 WHY ARE WE SEEING SO MUCH AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE, CHRONIC INFLAMMATION & METABOLIC DYSFUNCTION?

Could the modern American diet be contributing to the problem?

Research and teachings from Dr. Benjamin Bikman, PhD, a metabolic scientist specializing in insulin resistance, raise important questions about how our food choices affect cellular health.

🍞 LET’S TALK ABOUT CARBOHYDRATES AND INSULIN.

In many populations, carbohydrates make up more than 50–70% of daily caloric intake.

But not all carbohydrates are equal!

The concern is our growing dependence on refined carbohydrates, added sugars, and ultra-processed foods that provide calories but often lack essential nutrients.

When we consume carbohydrates, many are broken down into glucose, triggering insulin release.

Over time, poor dietary patterns, excess body fat, inactivity, and other metabolic stressors can contribute to INSULIN RESISTANCE.

🔥 NOW CONNECT THAT TO INFLAMMATION AND AUTOIMMUNITY.

Insulin resistance is closely associated with chronic low-grade inflammation.

Inflammatory signaling can interfere with insulin function, while metabolic dysfunction can influence how our immune system responds.

Autoimmune disease is more complex and involves genetics, immune dysregulation, and environmental factors. Insulin resistance is not proven to directly cause autoimmune disease, but metabolism and immune health are deeply interconnected.

AND DON’T FORGET THE GUT!

Your gut microbiome helps regulate immune responses, nutrient metabolism, and intestinal barrier function.

When we consistently replace nutrient-dense foods with highly processed foods, we may compromise the nutritional foundation our bodies need.

💪 YOUR BODY NEEDS MORE THAN CALORIES!

It needs:

* Protein and essential amino acids
* Healthy fats
* Vitamins and minerals
* Fiber and nutrient-dense whole foods
* Muscle-building movement
* Quality sleep and stress management

At MT Taylor Functional Medicine, I emphasize that we must look beyond blood sugar numbers and understand what is happening at the cellular and metabolic level.

We cannot expect optimal cellular function if we are constantly feeding the body calories without providing the nutrients required for repair, regulation, and recovery.

My philosophy is simple:

Feed your cells. Build your muscle. Support your gut. Improve your metabolic health.

Prevention begins with understanding how your body functions, not just how much you weigh.

GLP-1 MEDICATIONS & RECURRENT HYPOGLYCEMIA: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN BLOOD GLUCOSE STAYS TOO LOW?

GLP-1 medications can be effective tools for managing metabolic disease and obesity. However, persistent dizziness, weakness, fatigue, confusion, or documented low blood glucose should never be dismissed as simply part of the weight-loss process.

Hypoglycemia is defined as blood glucose below 70 mg/dL, with levels below 54 mg/dL considered clinically significant.

Repeated episodes of hypoglycemia can disrupt glucose homeostasis and the body’s neuroendocrine counterregulatory responses.

🧠 BRAIN & COGNITIVE FUNCTION

The brain relies heavily on glucose for energy production. Severe or prolonged hypoglycemia can cause neuroglycopenia, impaired cognition, poor coordination, seizures, and potentially permanent neurological injury.

❤️ CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM

Hypoglycemia activates the sympathoadrenal system, increasing catecholamine release, cardiac workload, and electrical instability. Severe episodes can contribute to arrhythmias and myocardial ischemia, particularly in vulnerable patients.

⚡ AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

Recurrent hypoglycemia can impair the body’s ability to recognize falling glucose levels, producing hypoglycemia-associated autonomic failure (HAAF). This reduces protective warning symptoms and increases the risk of subsequent severe episodes.

🧬 LIVER & KIDNEY FUNCTION

The liver and kidneys contribute to glucose homeostasis through glycogenolysis, gluconeogenesis, and metabolic regulation. Inadequate nutritional intake can compromise glucose availability. GLP-1-associated dehydration can also increase the risk of acute kidney injury.

💪 SKELETAL MUSCLE & METABOLIC FUNCTION

Excessive appetite suppression and inadequate protein or energy intake can contribute to loss of lean body mass, reduced strength, impaired exercise recovery, and nutritional deficiencies.

THE CLINICAL DISTINCTION:

GLP-1 medications do not commonly produce severe hypoglycemia when used alone. Risk increases when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas. Furthermore, dizziness does not automatically indicate hypoglycemia; dehydration, hypotension, and inadequate nutrition must also be evaluated.

MY CLINICAL MESSAGE:

Weight loss is not synonymous with metabolic health.

Preserving skeletal muscle, maintaining adequate nutritional intake, protecting neurological function, and supporting glucose stability must remain priorities during GLP-1 therapy.

If someone is repeatedly experiencing dizziness, weakness, or documented hypoglycemia, their medication regimen, glucose patterns, hydration, and nutritional status require clinical reassessment.

The goal is not simply to lose weight. The goal is to improve metabolic health while preserving physiological function.

🌿 MT TAYLOR FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE

🔥 Here’s a question worth asking!

If your A1C continues to climb, your blood sugar remains uncontrolled, and your medications keep increasing…

Are we addressing the underlying causes of your Type 2 diabetes, or are we only managing your blood sugar?

🧬 What about insulin resistance, metabolic dysfunction, nutrition, muscle mass, sleep, stress, and inflammation?

Managing blood sugar is important. Understanding WHY it’s elevated is just as important!

🧠🦠 Your gut, brain, and ability to move are more connected than you might think!

Balance, hopping, and coordination require more than muscle strength. They depend on your brain, nervous system, metabolism, and proprioception—your body’s awareness of where it is in space.

Research links metabolic dysfunction, inflammation, diabetic neuropathy, and changes in the gut microbiome with physical function.

Healthy aging means preserving strength, balance, coordination, independence—and the confidence to keep moving.
