Every Dementia Capable Care learner has a choice: build your own skills, or build your organization's capacity to teach those skills to others.

πŸ“˜ DCC Specialist Credential: Build your knowledge. Strengthen your practice. Best for direct care staff and clinicians deepening their own dementia-care expertise.

πŸŽ“ DCC Certified Instructor: Invest in your staff. Learn it. Teach it. Scale it. Best for organizations that want in-house capacity to train their own teams, again and again.

Neither path is "better" β€” they solve different problems. Which one solves yours?

MYTH: A person with dementia who can't finish a sentence has "lost" their ability to communicate.

REALITY: Communication ability changes β€” it doesn't disappear. A person may lose words but keep tone, emotion, gesture, and connection. Dementia Capable Care trains staff to communicate in ways that meet a person where they are, not where the disease has taken away.

Imagine sitting down to a meal, and the object in your hand no longer makes sense. You know you're hungry. You know something is expected of you. But the connection between the fork and the act of eating has quietly disappeared.

This is the reality for many people living with dementia β€” not a loss of desire to eat, but a loss of the ability to interpret and sequence a familiar object. Dementia Capable Care teaches caregivers to recognize functional loss like this and adapt the environment and approach β€” so a person can keep doing as much for themselves as possible, for as long as possible.

Pacing. Repeating questions. Refusing care. It's tempting to label these as "difficult behaviors" β€” but in dementia care, behavior is communication.

A person who can no longer explain that they're in pain, overstimulated, or afraid will often show us instead of tell us. Dementia Capable Care trains staff to pause and ask: What is this behavior trying to tell me?

When we look past the behavior to the need underneath it, we can respond with more compassion β€” and far more effectiveness.

What does it actually mean to be "Dementia Capable"?

It means an organization β€” and every person in it β€” understands how dementia affects the brain, and adjusts approach, environment, and communication accordingly. It's not a job title. It's a mindset that shows up in how care is delivered every single day.

It can feel faster β€” and safer β€” to simply do a task for someone living with dementia. But stepping in too quickly can take away more than a task; it can take away a sense of purpose, dignity, and function.

Supporting independence isn't about doing less. It's about doing it differently: breaking tasks into smaller steps, allowing extra time, and cueing rather than completing. Dementia Capable Care teaches caregivers how to find that balance β€” helping without taking over.

Dementia care isn't only about what we do for a person β€” it's also about the space around them. Lighting, noise levels, clutter, and even furniture placement can either support independence or create confusion and anxiety for someone living with dementia.

A dementia-capable environment reduces unnecessary strain on the brain, making it easier for a person to function, feel safe, and stay engaged. This month, we're focusing on how thoughtful environmental design becomes a form of care in itself.

🧠 Care is moving home. Is your workforce prepared to support the growing needs of individuals living with dementia?

When dementia is part of the care journey, teams need more than clinical expertise. Understanding cognitive function, retained abilities, communication, and person-centered approaches can help professionals provide support that promotes dignity, independence, and meaningful engagement at home.

Dementia Care Specialists is bringing that conversation to the 2026 National Alliance for Care at Home Annual Meeting & Exposition in Washington, DC.

🀝 If your organization provides home health, hospice, palliative care, or home care, we'd love to meet you and discuss how Dementia Capable Care training and consulting can help strengthen your workforce and the people you serve.

🎟️ Plus, stop by our booth and enter your name into our raffle for a chance to win one FREE certified training!
