I wish I could go back and hug this little girl.
When I was in elementary school, I was placed in special needs classes. I had a teacher tell me I would never be able to read.
I was told I had so many other limitations. So many things I would never be able to do.
What nobody knew at the time was that I was living with undiagnosed Lyme disease and co-infections that were affecting my brain, nervous system and entire body.
I wasn’t incapable of learning. I was a little girl trying to learn while living with an illness and trauma nobody understood.
And yet, I continued to believe and move forward in the best ways I could.
Over 30 years of clinical experience. More than 35,000 hours of education, study and clinical experience.
And one of my greatest loves in life?
I absolutely LOVE to read, study, research and learn everything I possibly can about the human body, healing and the incredible complexity of who we are.
But when I look at this little card I wrote to my grandma all those years ago, it’s not the misspelled words that stand out to me.
It’s the LOVE.
“Dear Grandma, When you feel sad, give me this ticket and I will kiss you or hug you.”
That little girl just wanted her grandma to know that whenever she was sad, she could come to her for love and comfort.
And you know what?
I still keep this little note on my refrigerator today.
Not to remind myself of the things I struggled with or the limitations other people placed on me.
But to remind myself to always come back to LOVE.
To vibrate from a place of LOVE.
Because when I look at that little girl, I realize something.
My heart has always been the same.
Even when I was struggling.
Even when people misunderstood me.
Even when I was being told what I couldn’t do.
All I wanted was to love people, help people and make their lives a little better.
And that is still who I am today.
That little girl grew up to become a practitioner, educator, business owner and someone who has dedicated her life to helping others find their own right path toward better health.
I wish I could tell her that one day, the very struggles that made her feel so different would help her understand people who are suffering in ways others cannot see.
I wish I could tell her that she would go on to accomplish things people told her were impossible.
And most of all, I wish I could hold her and tell her that she never needed to prove her worth to anyone.
She was always worthy of love, exactly as she was.
Today, I hold that little girl with so much love and compassion.
And I want people to understand something about me.
Behind all the education, credentials, businesses and everything I’ve created is still that same little girl who just wants to help people feel better.
To feel seen.
To feel understood.
To feel loved.
And to know that their circumstances today do not have to define what’s possible for their future.
Please don’t ever let someone else’s perception of your limitations become the story you believe about yourself.
Sometimes there’s so much more going on beneath the surface than anyone realizes.
And sometimes the little girl who was told she’d never be able to read grows up to spend her life learning how to help others heal.
Life has challenged me in ways I never could have imagined. And there have certainly been moments when I’ve lost sight of that little girl’s heart.
That’s why I keep her note on my refrigerator. I am so grateful my aunt found it and laminated it for me years ago.
To remember who I’ve always been.
To remember what matters most.
And to remind myself that no matter what life brings, I can always choose to come back to LOVE.
Sending you so much love! I’m so excited for you and all that’s possible! ❤️🦋
