Learn to practice the pause for 90 seconds when you feel especially triggered or emotional volatile. The 90 second pause allows the Sympathetic nervous system to turn “off” and allows the Parasympathetic nervous system to turn “on”, usually resulting in a much better outcome. Emotional regulation and executive functioning are indeed connected.
Development of social emotional skills includes awareness of self and self-monitoring skills. The regulation of our emotions is critical for executive functioning and cognitive task. When we regulated our behavior, the frontal lobe is in the forefront with its jobs of impulse control, initiation, self-monitoring and other cognitive tasks.
Furthermore, emotional skill development includes the ability to self-regulate. These skills mature and develop throughout childhood and into adulthood with positive role modeling and learning your own nervous system, and the way it responds with given stimuli. Learning to self-regulate is an essential skill needed throughout life.
