Known as the “pen guy” at Fairview Masonic Children's Hospital, 8-year-old Jon Dejoode has been spreading joy among his care team by giving handmade pens crafted from treasures he's collected throughout his journey with a rare bone marrow disease. Each trinket was given by his family to offer encouragement and recognize the many challenges he's faced, including hundreds of necessary lab draws and other medical procedures.

In honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, TB1Fund brought some extra joy to patients and families at Fairview Masonic Children’s University Hospital.

The afternoon included lunch from Cafe Latte, special sodas from dodopop, LEGO giveaways, and acoustic performances from country artists Noah Hicks and Chase Wright in the Love Your Melon Family Resource Center and Zucker Family Suite and Broadcast Studio.

We’re grateful to TB1Fund and the community partners who helped make the afternoon special for our patients and families.

8-year-old Jon Dejoode is known as the “pen guy” at Fairview Masonic Children’s University Hospital.

Jon has spent years navigating a rare bone marrow disease. He’s undergone a bone marrow transplant and receives ongoing infusions that bring him from Iowa to Minneapolis every other week.

Along the way, he began collecting small prizes, like Disney character figurines and toys that he earns for getting through tough moments during treatment. He uses those items to make special pens that he gives to nurses, doctors, patients and their families, and cafeteria staff.

More than 700 pens later, what started as a creative project has become Jon’s way of spreading joy and thanking the care teams who have supported his family for years.

“He hasn’t had experiences like other kids because of what he’s been through,” said Kim, Jon’s mom. “The care teams and hospital staff do so much to create a sense of normalcy for him. It’s special – being around kids who are experiencing other things that he is going through.”

The pens have become part of Jon’s journey, connecting him to the people who have helped make the hospital feel a little more like home.

This month, the Minnesota Twins helped make some memorable moments for kids and families at Fairview Masonic Children’s University Hospital.

At the Twins’ Childhood Cancer Awareness Game, five pediatric patients and a provider from Masonic Children’s Hospital were recognized on the field, celebrating the strength and courage they show every day.

Then, Twins players and TC Bear brought that same spirit to our children’s hospital, visiting with kids at their bedsides and sharing smiles, encouragement, and a little baseball magic.

Thank you to the Minnesota Twins for showing up for our patients, families, and care teams, both on the field and at the bedside.

This year, more than 300 Fairview and University of Minnesota Physicians providers were named Top Doctors by Minnesota Monthly, a recognition that celebrates their expertise, compassion, and commitment to caring for patients every day.

Spanning specialities in heart care, surgery, pediatrics, transplant medicine, women's health, and more, these physicians bring exceptional expertise to our communities.

“What stands out about this recognition is the breadth of expertise available to patients across Fairview,” said Jaya Kumar, MD, chief medical officer at Fairview. “From primary and specialty care to some of the most complex treatments available, these physicians bring deep expertise to patients while keeping the focus where it belongs: on the person in front of them.”

Fairview Masonic Children’s University Hospital is once again the top-ranked children's hospital in the Twin Cities and No. 2 in Minnesota by U.S. News and World Report.

Our hospital also earned national recognition for pediatric cancer care and gastroenterology. This marks the 19th consecutive year Masonic Children’s Hospital has been nationally recognized for providing high-quality, compassionate pediatric care close to home.

But what matters most is what makes recognition like this possible: teams coming together to care for children through everyday illnesses, complex diagnoses, surgeries, cancer treatment, and everything in between.

“Every child who comes through our doors brings a story, a family, and a future we are privileged to help protect,” said Catherine Larson-Nath, a pediatric gastroenterologist with University of Minnesota Physicians who cares for patients at Masonic Children’s Hospital.

Childhood vaccination rates are declining in Minnesota as kids return to school, according to new CDC data.

Anna Milz, MD, a pediatrician with Fairview, spoke with KARE 11 about why vaccines remain a safe and effective way to protect kids, families, and communities from preventable illnesses like measles.

With so much vaccine misinformation circulating online, Dr. Milz encourages parents to talk with their child’s healthcare provider about their questions and concerns. Watch the full story in the comments.

For our patients and families, a day like this means everything. 💜🏈

Four pediatric patients and their families from Fairview Masonic Children’s University Hospital, known to patients today as M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital, recently stepped onto the field to enjoy a special day at the WWE x Vikings Training Camp event, where they got to see Vikings players and WWE Superstars up close.

They visited the Vikings Museum, headed onto the field for autographs, and experienced Vikings Training Camp like true VIPs. More importantly, they got the chance to make memories together.

Thank you to the Minnesota Vikings, and Minnesota Sports and Events for making this special day possible.
