Linden tea or linden tincture? Matthew's answer, from the Immune System class in Herbs A-Z: the water wins.

Put the dried flowers in a quart jar, cover them with water, and leave it overnight. By morning the water is thick and slippery. That slip is the mucilage, and the mucilage is the cooling, coating part he wants for the hot autoimmune picture.

A tincture is quicker, and he's made one, but in his words, it won't preserve the mucilage. You get the flower without the slip, which is the part that does the cooling.

So: the tea when you want the slip. He teaches the rest of that hot picture live today.

Tomorrow at noon, Matthew Wood, MS teaches why the body turns on itself.

In plain words: the immune system's job is to burn up what doesn't belong. Matthew calls that fire inflammation, and you can feel its four signs: heat, redness, pain, swelling. Autoimmune is that fire running too hot and staying on. His word for it is overactive.

Thursday is about reading that heat in a real person, and the cooling herbs that answer it. Linden flower is first on his list.

When the Body Turns on Itself: Autoimmune with Matthew Wood, MS. Thursday October 15, 12:00 noon Central (Chicago), live on Zoom. $15 if you register before 11:00 AM Central tomorrow, $25 after that. The recording is included at both prices, so the only thing the deadline changes is what you pay.

Autoimmune runs hot. That's how Matthew Wood, MS teaches it.

In this clip from the Immune System class in Herbs A-Z he says it plainly: if you need linden flower in a Minnesota winter for an autoimmune condition, you're the hot one, not the weather.

Hot, red, overactive. When it comes to cooling herbs for that type of person, linden is the first one on the list.

He teaches all this live on Thursday October 15 at 12:00 noon Central (Chicago): When the Body Turns on Itself: Autoimmune with Matthew Wood, MS. $15 live, then $25 from 11:00 AM Central Thursday. The recording is included at both prices.

One herb this week: linden. In the Immune System class in Herbs A-Z, Matthew Wood, MS names linden flower first for the hot, red, overactive picture of autoimmune, and he gives one sign for when it fits.

Linden is cooling. Most people want it in summer, not in a nothern winter. So if you find yourself wanting linden flower in January for an autoimmune condition, that's a sign. In his words: you are hot, not the environment.

He teaches that hot picture live on Thursday October 15 at 12:00 noon Central (Chicago): When the Body Turns on Itself: Autoimmune with Matthew Wood, MS. $15 live, then $25 from 11:00 AM Central that morning. The recording is included at both prices.

Rose hips are what a wild rose leaves behind in October, and they're the week's fourth rose-family herb.

In The Rose Family class in Herbs A-Z, Matthew Wood, MS reads rose the way he reads its cousins: by the red in the palm. Wild cherry shows that red with yellow in it. Hawthorn shows it pale. Rose shows little dots of white, dark red, and red, which he reads as the heat going deeper. For that picture he uses the hips.

Rose hips are cooling and astringent, he says, and a red, moist tongue is the other sign that sends him to them.

Matthew Wood, MS on wild cherry bark and hawthorn, from The Rose Family in Herbs A-Z.

Same family, same red in the palm. Wild cherry shows it with a little yellow. Hawthorn shows it pale, and in the cheeks.

Wild cherry bark or hawthorn? Two herbs from the rose family, both cooling, and in The Rose Family class in Herbs A-Z.

Matthew Wood, MS and Phyllis D. Light, MA told them apart by looking at the person…

Wild cherry bark: Matthew looks at the palm. Red with a little yellow in it, that's wild cherry. The yellow is what taught him wild cherry is also a liver and gallbladder remedy, and he says he has not been disappointed in that indication.

Hawthorn: red with pale in the palm, and the cheeks go reddish. Then the mind. This is the person who can't keep their attention on one thing and hops from one to the next, and the one who wakes at two or three in the morning and can't get back to sleep. Phyllis calls hawthorn the herb for the heart, and recommends it whenever the heart is about to be under strain.

Same family, two different people. Which one sounds like someone you know?

Matthew has a short way of saying what autoimmunity is. He called it the body trying to defend itself against a strong stimulus, with the response turned up too high. Not a weak body. A body working too hard at its own job. That one comes from the Cooling Plants class in Holistic Pharmacology for Herbalists, part of The Library.

That's the question for October 15: what makes a body turn on itself and how an herbalist reads the signs.
