1. They see people we can’t. A mother. A husband. A childhood dog. Often someone who died years ago comes to take them home.
2. They talk about going on a trip. “Where’s my suitcase?” “I need my ticket.” “What time does the train leave?”
3. They wait. For the son flying in from Denver. For the daughter to finally say, “It’s okay to go.”
4. They leave the moment you step out. You went for coffee. Five minutes. Some souls need privacy to let go.
5. They rally. The day before, they sit up, eat, laugh, and know everyone’s name. It isn’t recovery. It’s a gift. A goodbye.
6. They reach for something above them. Arms lifted toward the ceiling, eyes fixed on a corner of the room, smiling at what we can’t see.
7. The room changes. The air goes still. The light shifts. Animals settle at the foot of the bed and won’t leave. Everyone feels it, even the skeptics.

1. Feeling relief when they died.
Especially after a long illness.
Relief doesn’t mean you didn’t love them.
It means you watched them suffer, and you’re glad the suffering is over.
2. Laughing again.
A real laugh, the kind that surprises you.
Then the guilt comes right behind it.
Grief and joy are all part of being human.
3. Not crying “enough.”
At the funeral. At the grave. When everyone expected you to.
Some grief arrives late.
Some grief is quiet.
Some grief shows up as exhaustion, or numbness.
There is no correct way to grieve.
4. Being angry at them.
For leaving. For not going to the doctor. For the things they never said.
I’ve sat at hundreds of bedsides.
Anger is one of the most common feelings and underneath is grief.
5. Forgetting, even for a moment.
Reaching for the phone to call them.
Waking up and forgetting, just for a second, that they’re gone.
Noticing you can’t quite remember their voice anymore.
Love doesn’t live in your memory. It lives in you.

In this episode of Everyday Awakening, I sit down with Patrick Marando for an honest, heartfelt conversation about turning inward and the quiet pull that guides us home to ourselves.
Patrick names the three steps to relieve your grief or any feeling you are holding.

We heal by going inward and feeling our feelings.

A delight to talk with Patrick! He has deeply lived what he shares here and in his new book - Waking Up to Your Self.

If you’re afraid that death is the end, I understand. I’ve sat with that fear at hundreds of bedsides. I’ve also seen what comes after it: peace, recognition, and loved ones who come to greet them.

Death isn’t the end. It’s a homecoming. 🕊️

1. They see loved ones who have already crossed.
A mother calling out to her own mother. A husband smiling at someone no one else can see.
2. They come back for one clear hour before they leave.
Days of silence, then suddenly bright eyes, full sentences, and goodbyes.
3. They wait.
For the right moment. For the son to arrive. For the daughter to step out of the room.
4. The energy shifts the moment they leave their body.
The air in the room changes. You can feel that someone has gone.
5. They come back to visit.
Days after they’ve passed, I’ve seen them, in reel time, hovering near me, and then gone.
6. They speak through strangers.
Someone you barely know tells you something only your loved one could have known, and you realize they’re carrying a message.
7. Peace fills the room.
After the last breath, a stillness settles over everyone. It’s deeper than quiet.

I’ve sat with thousands of people at the end of life.

What I’ve witnessed has changed everything I believe about death.

Can you be open, and curious. There is so much more beyond what we can see.

10/06/2026

1. Part of me feels relieved.
After a long illness, or after years of caregiving, relief can come with the sorrow. It doesn’t mean you loved them less. It means you were carrying something very heavy for a long time.
2. I’m angry at them for leaving.
Anger doesn’t cancel love. Often it is love that has nowhere to go.
3. I’m scared I’m forgetting them.
The sound of their voice or their laugh starts to fade, and panic sets in. Your memory may soften, but the bond is still there. Love isn’t stored in details.
4. I had a good day… and then I felt guilty.
Laughing again isn’t a betrayal. Joy and grief can sit at the same table.
5. I don’t know who I am without them.
Grief changes how you see yourself. You aren’t lost. You’re becoming someone new, and they’re still part of who you are.

If you’ve had any of these thoughts, nothing is wrong with you.
You’re grieving, and grief is love. 🤍
