Somebody tell me when RJ got promoted to ackee expert?!!!!
We were in the kitchen pe***ng ackee for dinner and this boy decided the whole house needed a lesson.
Lesson one: never pick ackee that's still closed. In his words, "You may end up in the hospital."
And honestly? He's not wrong. Ackee has to open up on the tree by itself before it's ready. A closed pod isn't ripe yet, and unripe ackee carries a natural toxin that can make you seriously sick. So we wait for it to open, we only eat the creamy yellow part, and the black seeds and that little pink skin inside go straight in the trash. Every time. No shortcuts.
Lesson two, with a full demonstration: "You peel it like a banana." Okay, Professor.
Then he hits us with his bonus advice. If you see a bug around your produce, don't panic, that just means it's organic.
For the record, there were NO bugs in our ackee. He was just sharing his wisdom with the people. (And yes, we still wash everything.)
Moments like this are why I keep him in the kitchen with me. He's learning how to prepare the food I grew up on, where it comes from, and how to respect it. That's culture. That's knowledge being passed down.
And apparently, it's also the start of his career as RJ, The Ackee Expert 🇯🇲
