The mountain didn’t change her. The climb did. 🏔️

Partway through her journey to Kilimanjaro, Marite Efremenkova ‘s life was turned upside down. For a moment, she thought she’d have to walk away from her training and her goal.

So she took some time. She regrouped. And then she made a decision:

“I’m not going to let this stop me. I’m worth it.”

She recommitted, not just to a mountain but to herself. Every early training session after that was her choosing herself again. Every hard day she showed up anyway was her fighting for the life she wanted.

And at 63 years old, Marite stood on Uhuru Peak, 19,341 feet above sea level, on the Roof of Africa.

This is the part of training we don’t talk about enough. Yes, it builds strength and endurance. But sometimes it’s the thing that holds you steady when everything else is shaking. Sometimes chasing a goal is how you remember who you are.

The lessons on the way up shape who we are at the top.

Marite, you are an inspiration and a role model to me (spoken by Coach Brittany Peterson ), to our team, and to so many people who will read this and see themselves in your story. Thank you for letting us share it. We are so proud of you. 💚

If you’re in a season where life has knocked you down: your goals are still yours. You are still worth fighting for. Don’t you ever forget that.

Training Tip Tuesday with Coach Brittany Peterson 📝

Today we are GIVING YOU ALL PERMISSION to listen to your body - and to give yourself grace when needed. If you are scheduled for a workout but everything is telling you today is not the day - you are fatigued, you feel flat, maybe you’re missing paces that you know you should hit - it is ALWAYS better to listen to your body and adjust the expectations for the day.

This can mean - -
🍂Converting the run to an easy day
🍂Ending the run entirely to allow greater recovery
🍂Ending the workout early

❌ What it doesn’t mean: squeezing the workout in somewhere else to “make it up.”

If you’re fatigued or falling flat you need more recovery. This is where communication with your coach is critical to determine if the workout should be rescheduled by rearranging the rest of the week or if it is better to forget about it, take the extra recovery and focus on the workouts ahead (many times this is the best option!).

Smart training requires listening to what your body is telling you and adapting when needed. This can be hard at times, but remember how the hard choices are often the right ones. RECOVERY is training too!

End of season may be getting closer, but we still have athletes with big goals coming up and we wanted to remind everyone racing to TRUST their training and TRUST the process.

Race week isn’t the time to wonder if you did enough.

The work has already been done. You’ve put in months of training. You’ve built and adapted, learned and grown.

Now it’s time to celebrate that work and let it carry you.

Trust your training.
Trust the process.
Trust yourself.

Remember to Run Wild and Chase your Peak team!!! ⛰️

Before jumping into your next training block, take a look back at your last race.

Not just your finish time — look at how the race unfolded.

Where did you feel strong?
Where did things start to fall apart?
Did you struggle with fueling?
How did your legs feel on the climbs and descents?
Did you fade late, or finish feeling like you had more to give?

Your race is data.

Those answers can tell you a lot about what your next training block should focus on — whether that’s building more durability, improving your fueling, getting stronger on climbs, becoming more efficient on descents, or simply learning how to pace your effort better.

The goal isn’t to just train harder for the next race.

It’s to train smarter based on what the last one taught you. 🧠

Athlete Shoutout!!! 📣📣📣

A huge congrats to athlete Catrina Aniballi on her 🥉 place finish at the Sleigh Me 24 Hour Ultra a few weekends ago! Cat was able to finish the 24 hours, which set a new duration PR to compliment the excitement of a podium finish!

Here’s what she had to say about her race -

“Overall I did feel I did the best I could and the fact I came in third made me happy. I was talking to a couple of people and their quote was “I shouldn’t feel this bad this early but the terrain is killing me.” These were experienced 100+mile runners. The terrain was an odd one - on paper it seemed easier than other races but the technical parts were challenging to navigate at night. I did enjoy the location, a reindeer farm is cool! Thanks to Coach Manuela Vilaseca for helping me prepare for this race!”

Another really cool part of Cat’s race recap was how she was able to help out 3 different runners throughout her race - sharing a headlamp, helping another competitor get back on course and sharing one of her poles with another athlete struggling on the terrain. This is incredible to have someone who embodies the meaning of “Collective” and is there to help others succeed in their goals as well! That is amazing Cat! 🙏

Huge congratulations again and we are grateful to have you on the team! 🎉

Training Tip Tuesday with Coach ! 📝

She is fresh off her finish (and 🥉) at so she’s absolutely “walking the walk” in terms of focusing on her recovery and paying attention to key recommendations for how to truly recover after a big event (which includes the big training leading into the big event).

So how do we really get the most out of recovery blocks post-event?

1. Maximize nutrition (eat all the food!!) 🍔🥙🍕
2. Maximize sleep (take all the naps!) 😴💤
3. Active recovery - don’t force resumption of training. Give yourself time for other forms of activity - walks, yoga, mobility - the key is low impact, which jeans hold off on running for a bit!🧘‍♀️🧘‍♂️

Remember, your mind may be itching to get back into training, but allowing it time to decompress and rejuvenate is just as important as giving your body time to heal, recover and rebuild after a big effort.

Both areas have underwent big demands in order to tackle your goals on race day, so to keep both your mind and your body sharp, give them each the rest and recovery they require in order to achieve sustainable training and racing in the future!

Happy training everyone (and by ”training” we do mean recovery as well!!)

Questions we get all the time as trail & ultra coaches - more detailed answers 👇

Q: “I’m not elite, can I still have a coach?”
A: Anyone can benefit from a coach. As long as your “why” is strong, you’re excited to jump into the challenge and you collaborate and communicate with your coach, coaching can be a beautiful partnership with abundant reward.

Q: “Whet if I can’t follow my training plan perfectly?”
A: This is NORMAL! Life happens and things may need to get adjusted or altered. This is a huge benefit of a good coaching relationship - someone to help you balance training with life and rearrange as needed.

Q: “I seem to be injury prone. Can I still complete an ultra?”
A: Every situation is different, but largely the answer is yes. This is where careful design to your training block(s) and extra emphasis on injury prevention is critical. A multisport approach to training with inclusion of cross training and strength training can still lead to successful results!

Q: “I’m pretty new to training. Am I bothering you with too many questions?”
A: Absolutely not! Having regular communication is essential to optimizing training and is key to a successful coaching relationship! We value all communication and strongly encourage this part of the coaching process!

Q: “Do you have to run big volume?”
A: We don’t have a “one size fits all” prescription for training. We customize training progression to each individual athlete, which includes training history, capacity/load tolerance, injury history, goals and more. We aren’t against big volume (when it fits), but this isn’t the only key to success either.

Q: “I don’t live in the mountains. Can I still be ready for a more mountainous race?”
A: Absolutely! There are so many effective ways to still train your body (and mind) for the demands of a mountainous race. We lean into strength training, cross training and creative forms of still simulating the demands of the mountains.

You can see some themes ➡️ individualization, context and history, communication and teamwork!!!!
