Today I went for a walk at the creek and decided to start in the opposite direction from the way I normally do. As I walked, I noticed things I hadn't noticed before. Some things I had seen many times, but this time I saw them in a completely different way.
The walk also came with a few more challenges. I had to walk uphill instead of down, and the sun was shining directly on me instead of behind me.
It reminded me how a slight change can shift our perspective. We often resist change because it can be harder, or because it leads to unknown outcomes. Even when the change is small, our bodies and minds can brace against it. The unknown can feel uncomfortable, but it can also be where curiosity lives.
Once I noticed one thing, I became curious about what else would look different simply from changing directions. I saw the creek in a different way. I saw plants from a full view. I even found a public garden to walk through.
Shifting perspectives can be hard. We often think our perspective is the right one and anything against that is wrong. We stay with what feels easy and familiar. We stay with what makes us feel good.
When we are willing to shift our perspective, we make room for understanding, compassion, and connection. We begin to see that someone else's view can be true for them without erasing what is true for us. We also grow, because we are no longer limited to the one angle we have always known.
Shifting perspectives does not require a big leap. It can start with one small choice to look at something differently, whether that is a familiar place, a conversation, or a belief you have held for a long time.
I invite you to try it this week. Choose one thing you see the same way every day and ask yourself, "What else could be true here?" Allow yourself to be curious instead of certain.
