“Sweeping changes to Medicaid are underway, and Vermont’s free clinics are bracing for an influx of patients no longer eligible for coverage.
“The changes could affect thousands of Vermonters. They involve new work requirements and renewal procedures for Medicaid, the federal insurance plan for low-income individuals, and come on the heels of the Trump administration’s federal health care overhaul, aimed at eliminating waste and fraud in the federal healthcare system.
“Local affordable health care providers warn the changes will create an even bigger headache for low-income Vermonters navigating the healthcare system.
“’We expect to see potentially hundreds of new patients next year who are finding themselves uninsured for the first time,’ said Daniel Barlow, the executive director of the People’s Health and Wellness Clinic in Barre, which provides free preventive care to more than 700 Vermonters a year.”

Thousands of Vermonters could lose Medicaid coverage under new rules, leaving the state's free clinics bracing for a wave of uninsured patients.

” Three-quarters of Americans across party lines say healthcare will be one of the top three issues deciding their vote, finds a new survey.
“The People’s Health Care Survey, USofCare’s annual survey that captures people’s experiences with and challenges in healthcare, reached over 2,700 registered voters from June 12 through July 16. It was designed to be nationally representative, and responses were weighted to match the U.S. population based on recent Census data. USofCare describes itself as a nonpartisan nonprofit focused on advancing policies that improve access to quality, affordable healthcare.
“Three-quarters of Americans feel frustrated, overwhelmed or helpless about healthcare costs, the survey found. Frustration peaks among people with commercial coverage (54%), Marketplace coverage (54%) or no coverage at all (49%). Among people insured through Medicare, Medicaid and the VA, frustration drops to just over a third.”

“Judith Hetzell, 64, admits she was wrong in stealing almost $81,000 from her nonprofit employer. A federal judge sentenced her to two months in prison and two years of supervised release for seven counts of bank fraud.
“It’s a common enough crime. How often have we seen an employee who took an employer’s or charity’s money and spent it on vacations, shopping, even cars?
“Hetzell’s crimes weren’t funding a lavish lifestyle. Instead, she used the money to pay for her mother’s medical care and nursing home bills.
“Hetzell’s circumstances don’t excuse her actions. She stole money from accounts belonging to five people served by Federated Guardians, an agency in the business of providing guardianship and other services. Hetzell was absolutely wrong. She rightly pleaded guilty.
“But her time behind bars and a promise to pay restitution out of her husband’s retirement funds does not change the reality of the problem.
“We live in the most advanced time for medical treatment, with the longest lifespan in history. Western Pennsylvania has excellent providers.
“And what does any of that mean if people are pushed to theft to afford it?”

The story of “Les Miserables,” both the novel and the Broadway musical, tells us of a man who spent time in prison for theft. He committed the crime of stealing bread to feed a child. Grocery prices are up, but most of us can scrape up a couple of dollars
