🩺 Why Are Vital Signs Checked So Often?

Blood pressure. Heart rate. Temperature. Weight.

If you've participated in clinical research, you may wonder why the study team checks some of the same things at visit after visit.

Vital signs can help researchers monitor a participant's health over time and identify changes that may be important during a study.

Repeated measurements can also help researchers compare information from different points in the trial.

The exact measurements and schedule depend on the study protocol.

So the next time your coordinator reaches for that blood pressure cuff again there's a reason! 😊

❤️ The Little Things Add Up

Your health doesn't depend on one perfect meal, one workout or one good night's sleep.

It's the things you do consistently that add up over time.
🚶 Move your body.
🥗 Nourish it.
💧 Stay hydrated.
😴 Give yourself enough rest.
💊 Take medications as directed.
🩺 Keep up with your healthcare.

You don't have to change everything today.

Keep doing the little things that take care of you. They matter. ❤️

What Is Randomization?

Another research word that can sound complicated:
Randomization.

In a randomized clinical trial, participants are assigned to study groups using a chance-based process rather than having the participant or study team simply choose the group.

Why?

Randomization helps make groups more comparable and reduces certain types of bias when researchers evaluate study results.

Depending on the trial, groups might receive different treatments, different doses, a standard treatment or a placebo.

The informed consent process should explain how assignment works for a particular study.

You don't have to know research terminology before considering a clinical trial. That's what questions are for.

🧼 Global Handwashing Day!

Clean hands. Simple habit. Big impact.

Today is Global Handwashing Day!

Handwashing is one of the simplest ways we can help reduce the spread of germs.

Remember to wash with soap and clean running water, scrub all areas of your hands, and take your time about 20 seconds.

Especially remember to wash:
• Before preparing or eating food
• After using the restroom
• After coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose
• After caring for someone who is sick
• Whenever your hands are visibly dirty

Sometimes the simplest health habits are among the most important.

What Is a Placebo?

What exactly is a placebo?

It's a word people hear frequently when talking about clinical trials.

A placebo is an inactive treatment designed to resemble the treatment being studied but without the active study ingredient.

In some clinical trials, researchers compare a study treatment with a placebo to better understand whether changes participants experience are related to the treatment itself.

Not every clinical trial uses a placebo.

When a study does, the informed consent process explains how the study is designed and the possibility of receiving placebo.

Understanding how a study works is an important part of deciding whether participation is right for you.

❤️ Don't Let One Bad Day Become a Bad Week!

Ate differently than you planned?
Missed your walk?
Didn't get enough sleep?
Had one of those days where nothing went according to plan?

That's one day not a reason to give up.

Healthy habits aren't built by being perfect every day.

They're built by returning to them again and again.

Tomorrow is another opportunity to make a healthy choice.

One difficult day doesn't erase your progress. Keep going. ❤️

💚 World Mental Health Day

Today is World Mental Health Day. 💚

Taking care of your health includes taking care of your mental and emotional well-being.

Rest matters.

Connection matters.

Talking about how you're feeling matters.

Asking for help when you need it matters.

Mental health is health.

Today is a good reminder to check in with yourself and perhaps check in with someone you care about, too.

You never know when a simple “How are you really doing?” might matter.

💊 Why Does a Research Team Ask About Your Medications?

One of the questions you'll hear frequently during clinical research is:
“Have any of your medications changed?”

There's an important reason we keep asking.

Prescription medications, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and supplements can sometimes affect study treatments, laboratory results or other aspects of participation.

Research teams may need to document:
• What you're taking
• How much you take
• How often you take it
• When you started or stopped it
• Any changes during the study

That's why it's important to tell your research team about medication changes even something that may seem minor.

Accurate information helps the research team follow the study requirements and look after participant safety.

Health Literacy Month

It's okay to ask questions about your health.

Medical information can be confusing.

Lab results. Medications. Diagnoses. Procedures. Treatment options. Medical terminology.

You aren't expected to automatically understand all of it.
Try asking:
❓ What does this mean?
❓ Why do I need this test?
❓ What are my options?
❓ Can you explain that another way?
❓ What should I do next?

Take notes. Ask questions. And speak up when something isn't clear.

Understanding your health information can help you take a more active role in your care.

You should never feel embarrassed about asking someone to explain.

Have you ever looked at your lab results and wondered, “What exactly is eGFR?”

Or maybe you've noticed your creatinine result and weren't sure what that number was telling you.

Both can provide important information about how well your kidneys are functioning but neither tells the whole story by itself.

Our latest blog breaks down:

• What creatinine is
• What eGFR estimates
• Why trends over time matter
• Why urine protein testing may also be important
• Why one abnormal result doesn't necessarily mean you have kidney disease

📖 Learn more about understanding your kidney numbers:

Learn what eGFR and creatinine mean, how they help evaluate kidney function, and why healthcare providers look at trends and other tests when assessing kidney health.
