🎉 BIG NEWS! Gentle Care Midwifery is expanding to Lewisburg, WV! 💜💛

I am excited to announce that I will now be offering care in Lewisburg, West Virginia, operating out of the office of Soza Wellness!

With the recent closure of a local labor unit, access to maternity care has become increasingly limited in the area. I recognize the challenges this creates for families, especially those traveling long distances to receive the care they need. So, I'm coming to you!

My goal with this expansion is simple: to make quality, personalized maternity care more accessible to families in Greenbrier County, WV, and our neighboring communities in Virginia.

Breech birth is often treated as an automatic emergency, but breech is not automatically dangerous or abnormal. It is a variation of birth that requires a provider who understands what normal breech looks like, how breech unfolds, and when skilled hands are needed.

A breech baby is positioned bottom-first or feet-first instead of head-first. For many families, the first conversation they hear about breech is centered around fear and automatic C-section. In our care, the conversation is centered around assessment, options, skill, and informed choice.

Most breech babies are not in an active emergency simply because they are breech, and cesarean birth does not need to be the default or only solution in every situation. For some families, with the right assessment, preparation, and provider experience, vaginal breech birth can be a reasonable option to discuss.

As a breech provider, my role is to look at the whole picture: your health, your baby’s well-being, baby’s position, gestational age, labor patterns, birth history, ultrasound findings when needed, and whether the situation supports a safe vaginal breech birth plan.

The goal is not to force a breech birth or to prove anything. The goal is to preserve safe options, support physiology, recognize normal, solve the abnormal when it appears, and know when more resources are needed.

Breech birth deserves respect, skill, and calm confidence, not fear.

What about emergencies?

This is one of the most important questions families can ask.

A large part of safe homebirth care happens long before labor begins through ongoing prenatal risk assessment. At each visit, we are watching the whole picture: your health, your baby’s health, lab results, blood pressure, growth, fetal position, symptoms, history, and anything that may change whether homebirth remains an appropriate plan.

During labor, we continue that same careful assessment. We monitor you, your baby, labor progress, bleeding, vital signs, and overall well-being. Our goal is not to wait for a crisis, but to notice concerns early, respond appropriately, and transfer when that is the safest next step.

Our team is trained to respond to birth emergencies and comes prepared with equipment, supplies, and medications. We bring items such as fetal monitoring tools, oxygen, newborn resuscitation equipment, IV supplies, fluids, medications for postpartum bleeding, sterile instruments, suturing supplies, and newborn assessment supplies.

We also practice emergency skills as a team, including response to postpartum hemorrhage, newborn transition/resuscitation, shoulder dystocia, maternal shock, IV access, medication administration, and clear team communication. Some urgent situations can be managed safely at home, with the right training and supplies, while other situations need hospital resources. Knowing the difference is part of skilled midwifery care.

Most homebirth transfers are not dramatic emergencies. Many happen for non-emergent reasons, such as prolonged labor, maternal exhaustion, request for pain relief, abnormal but non-urgent findings, or a need for closer monitoring. When transfer is recommended, it is not treated as a failure. It is part of our safety plan.

If a hospital transfer becomes necessary, we coordinate the transfer, communicate relevant information, send records, and go with you and/or your baby.

Homebirth safety is not built on pretending emergencies never happen. It is built on preparation, honest risk assessment, skilled care, and knowing when more resources are needed. 💜💛
