🦶 Strong & Steady Saturdays: Release the Fascia in Your Feet!

Did you know that tension in your feet may influence how your entire body moves?

Your feet are your foundation, and the fascia—the connective tissue that surrounds and supports your muscles, joints, and other structures—forms a continuous, interconnected network throughout your body.

When the fascia in your feet becomes restricted or less mobile, it can influence movement patterns farther up the chain, potentially affecting your ankles, knees, hips, pelvis, and even your back.

✨ Why does releasing foot fascia matter?

✅ Improve mobility: Encourage healthier movement of the tissues in your feet.

✅ Support better mechanics: Your feet help absorb and transfer forces with every step. Improving foot mobility may help your body manage those forces more efficiently.

✅ Reduce tension: Gentle fascial techniques may help decrease the sensation of tightness and improve comfort.

✅ Address the whole chain: Because your body works as an interconnected system, improving mobility in one area may positively influence movement in other areas.

🎥 Watch this video to see a simple intervention designed to help release restrictions and improve fascial mobility in your foot.

Remember, the goal isn't just to treat the spot that hurts. It's to understand how your body moves as a whole and address the factors that may be contributing to discomfort.

At Integrative Therapy & Wellness, we look beyond symptoms to help you move better, feel better, and get back to doing what you love!

💚 Small changes at your foundation can make a meaningful difference in how you move.

🍂🍄 NUTRITION WITH INTENTION: NUTRITIONAL YEAST & IMMUNE HEALTH! 🦠

As we head into cold and flu season, it's a great time to revisit a versatile pantry staple: nutritional yeast!

🌿 WHY CONSIDER NUTRITIONAL YEAST?

Nutritional yeast is an inactive yeast with a savory, cheesy flavor. Depending on the product, it can provide:

✨ Protein to support immune cells and tissue repair.

✨ B vitamins that help support energy metabolism and normal cellular function.

✨ Beta-glucans and other yeast components gut healing and immune boosting activity.

🍽️ EASY WAYS TO ENJOY NUTRITIONAL YEAST

🧀 Sprinkle it over popcorn instead of cheese powder.
🥦 Add it to roasted vegetables.
🍝 Stir it into pasta sauces or soups.
🥚 Sprinkle it over scrambled eggs.
🥗 Blend it into homemade salad dressings or dairy-free sauces.

💚 OUR TIP: CHOOSE UNFORTIFIED NUTRITIONAL YEAST!

If you prefer to avoid added synthetic vitamins, look for unfortified nutritional yeast and check the ingredient label. Unfortified products can still provide naturally occurring nutrients, although their nutritional content varies.

🌿 At Integrative Therapy & Wellness, we believe that small, intentional food choices can contribute to a foundation for good health. No single food guarantees protection from illness, but a varied, nutrient-rich diet is a great place to start!

☀️ LIGHT CAN IMPROVE YOUR SLEEP—OR WRECK IT! 🌙

Did you know that light is one of the most powerful signals controlling your body's internal clock? It influences your circadian rhythm, hormone timing, sleep quality, energy levels, and metabolic health!

☀️ MORNING LIGHT: SET YOUR CLOCK

Outdoor light in the morning signals your brain that it's time to be awake. This helps regulate your circadian rhythm and supports the timing of melatonin release later in the day.

✅ Get outside within an hour of waking.
✅ Aim for 5–10 minutes minimum outdoors on a bright day, allowing longer when it's cloudy.
✅ Look toward your surroundings—not directly at the sun!
✅ Skip scrolling on your phone and let natural daylight do its job.

🌙 EVENING LIGHT: SIGNAL WIND-DOWN

Bright light at night, especially blue-enriched light, can interfere with your body's natural sleep signals and delay melatonin release.

Try these simple changes:
💡 Dim overhead lights in the evening.
📱 Reduce screen brightness and limit screen time before bed.
🕯️ Choose softer, warmer lighting as bedtime approaches.
⏰ Keep your sleep and wake times consistent.

🧠 WHY IT MATTERS

Your body thrives on predictable rhythms. Consistent light exposure during the day and reduced light at night can help support healthier sleep-wake patterns, daytime alertness, and overall well-being.

🌿 The ITW takeaway: Better sleep doesn't always start with a supplement! Sometimes, one of the most effective places to begin is with your daily light exposure.

Small changes. Powerful signals. Better habits.

⚡ STEMWAVE: REIGNITING YOUR BODY’S HEALING POTENTIAL! ⚡

What if the key to moving better wasn't simply masking pain—but helping your body restart its own repair processes? 💚

At Integrative Therapy & Wellness (ITW), we use StemWave focused shockwave therapy to help stimulate the body's natural healing response and support recovery in areas affected by persistent pain or injury.

🌟 HOW DOES STEMWAVE WORK?

StemWave delivers focused acoustic waves into targeted tissues. These mechanical signals may help stimulate local cellular activity, support circulation, and influence the biological processes involved in tissue repair.

Rather than relying on medication to temporarily quiet symptoms, this noninvasive treatment is designed to encourage the body's own healing mechanisms.

💪 WHO MAY BENEFIT?

StemWave may be considered as part of a treatment plan for:
✅ Persistent muscle and joint pain
✅ Tendon-related conditions
✅ Sports injuries and overuse issues
✅ Certain chronic soft-tissue problems
✅ Recovery when healing has stalled

⚡ WHY CONSIDER STEMWAVE?
✨ Quick sessions—often just 5–10 minutes per treatment area
✨ Noninvasive, with no incisions
✨ Typically no downtime
✨ Can be integrated with physical therapy and individualized care

Healing isn't always a straight line. When pain persists, the goal is to look beyond the symptoms and address the tissues, movement patterns, and contributing factors that may be keeping you stuck.

At ITW, we combine innovative therapies with a whole-person approach to help you work toward better movement, improved function, and a more active life.

🌿 Ready to explore whether StemWave is right for you? Contact Integrative Therapy & Wellness to learn more!

🌿 TUESDAY TIPS & TRICKS: 3 ACUPRESSURE POINTS THAT MAY HELP EASE NAUSEA!

Did you know that gentle pressure on certain acupuncture points may help relieve nausea? You don't always need needles to explore the benefits of acupressure! 🙌

✨ Here are 3 points to try!

👍 1. Large Intestine 4 (LI4) – The Hand Point
📍 Find the fleshy muscle between your thumb and index finger.
👉 Apply gentle, circular pressure for 1–2 minutes on each hand.

⚠️ Avoid this point during pregnancy unless advised by a qualified healthcare professional.

💚 2. Pericardium 6 (PC6) – The Nausea Point
📍 Turn your palm upward. Measure about three finger-widths down from your wrist crease toward your elbow. The point lies between the two prominent tendons.
👉 Apply gentle, steady pressure for 2–3 minutes on each wrist.

Research suggests PC6 may help with certain types of nausea, including motion-related and postoperative nausea.

🌱 3. Stomach 36 (ST36) – The Digestive Support Point
📍 Measure about four finger-widths below your kneecap, just to the outside of your shinbone.
👉 Apply gentle, circular pressure for 1–2 minutes on each leg.

This point is traditionally used to support digestive function and overall well-being.

✨ Tips for success:
✔️ Use comfortable pressure—never press hard enough to cause pain.
✔️ Breathe slowly and relax.
✔️ Stop if symptoms worsen or you experience discomfort.

💡 Remember: Acupressure may help relieve nausea, but it doesn't replace medical care. Seek prompt medical attention for persistent vomiting, dehydration, severe abdominal pain, or blood in vomit.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT: WHAT CAN GETTING UP OFF THE FLOOR TELL YOU ABOUT YOUR HEALTH?

Did you know that your ability to sit down on the floor & get back up may reveal more about your health and longevity than you realize?

🔬 The research is fascinating!

📚 2012 Study: Researchers followed 2,002 adults ages 51–80 for a median of 6.3 years. The Sitting-Rising Test (SRT) evaluated how well participants could sit on the floor & rise back up, with points deducted for using their hands or knees for support. Lower scores were associated with a higher risk of death from any cause. Each additional point was associated with better survival.

📚 2025 Study: Researchers expanded this work by studying 4,282 adults ages 46–75 over a median follow-up of 12.3 years. After adjusting for age, s*x, body mass index, & clinical factors, participants scoring 0–4 out of 10 had a 3.84-fold higher risk of death from natural causes and a 6.05-fold higher risk of cardiovascular death compared with those scoring a perfect 10.

🧠 Why does this matter?
The Sitting-Rising Test reflects several components of physical fitness working together: muslce strength/power, balance, coordination and flexibility. The good new is, you can reverse the risk! For every one point increase in the SRT, the risk of mortality decreased 21%!

🌿 The ITW perspective: Healthy aging is about more than cardio! Maintaining strength, mobility, balance, and flexibility is an important part of supporting long-term function and quality of life.

Start where you are. Build strength gradually. Practice safe, controlled movement, and work with a qualified professional to address limitations that may be holding you back.

⚠️ Important: The SRT is a research tool, not a diagnostic test or a prediction of any individual's lifespan. If getting down to or up from the floor is difficult for you, don't attempt the test without appropriate guidance.

💚 At Integrative Therapy & Wellness, we believe in helping you move better, feel stronger, and stay active through every stage of life.

💪🌿 STRONG & STEADY SATURDAYS: FASCIA FUNDAMENTALS — PART 1

✨ Your muscles aren’t the whole story! Let’s talk fascia.

Ever feel stiff or restricted, even when you stretch regularly? Your fascia may be part of the picture!

🌿 What is fascia?

Fascia is a continuous web of connective tissue that surrounds and connects your muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels, and organs. Think of it as your body's internal support network!

Healthy fascia helps tissues glide smoothly, distributes forces throughout the body, and contributes to mobility and body awareness.

💧 How can you keep your fascia happy?

✅ MOVE OFTEN: Walk, change positions, and avoid sitting in one position for too long.

✅ HYDRATE: Drink water consistently to support the normal structure and function of connective tissues.

✅ MOVE IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS: Reach, rotate, bend, and explore gentle whole-body movements.

✅ STRETCH GENTLY: Use comfortable, controlled movements. Consistency matters more than intensity!

✅ TRY SELF-MASSAGE: Foam rollers and massage balls may temporarily improve mobility and ease the sensation of tightness.

✅ BUILD STRENGTH: Gradually strengthening muscles and connective tissues helps your body handle everyday demands.

🌟 Remember: Fascia isn't simply something you need to “break up.” It responds to movement, loading, hydration, and recovery. The goal is to help your body move well—not force your tissues into submission!

Stay tuned for more Strong & Steady Saturdays as we explore practical ways to improve mobility, stability, and movement confidence. 💚

📍 At Integrative Therapy & Wellness, we look at the whole movement system—not just the area that hurts.

🫘 TUESDAY TIPS & TRICKS: Don’t Be Afraid of Beans! 🫘

Beans sometimes get a bad reputation because of bloating and concerns about lectins—but properly prepared beans can be an incredibly nutritious addition to your diet!

Beans provide fiber, plant-based protein, resistant starch, polyphenols, vitamins and minerals that can support both gut health and overall health. 🌱

🦠 Your gut bugs LOVE them!

The fiber and resistant starch in beans provide fuel for beneficial gut bacteria. As these bacteria ferment fiber, they produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that help support the intestinal environment, immune function and healthy inflammatory balance.

❤️ Beans can also support:
• Healthy cholesterol levels
• Blood sugar regulation
• Satiety and weight management
• Cardiovascular health
• Regular bowel movements
• A diverse, healthy microbiome

🌿 But what about lectins?

Raw or undercooked beans can contain significant amounts of lectins and other compounds that can cause digestive problems. The good news? Proper cooking dramatically reduces lectin activity.

Here’s my preferred method:

🫘 1. Soak your dried beans: Cover them with plenty of water & soak for 5–12 hours.

💧 2. Drain & rinse: Drain and rinse the beans well.

🔥 3. Cook thoroughly: Cover with fresh water and bring to a full boil, then continue cooking until the beans are completely tender. A pressure cooker can also be used.

🌟 For the lowest levels of lectins, rinse again (after cooking until tender) then add them to a delicious sauce and cook for another 10 minutes or so to allow them to soak up the flavor of your sauce. 🌟

💡 Start slowly! If you're not accustomed to eating beans, begin with small portions and gradually increase them. Your microbiome needs time to adjust to the additional fermentable fiber.

And remember: canned beans can be a convenient option too! Choose low-sodium varieties when possible and rinse them before eating.

🫘 Beans aren't just a cheap source of protein—they're a powerful food for your gut microbiome!

✨ Food can be one of the simplest ways to support your health.

🔬 RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT: Your Gut May Be Affecting Your Sleep! 😴🦠

When we talk about better sleep, we usually hear about reducing screen time, managing stress, getting morning sunlight, or limiting caffeine.

But there’s another piece of the puzzle that often gets overlooked: your gut microbiome.

A large new study involving nearly 7,000 adults examined the relationship between gut bacteria and sleep. Researchers identified 137 bacterial species associated with at least one measure of sleep, and more than one-third of those associations were replicated in a separate group of participants.

Even after accounting for factors such as existing health conditions, physical activity, alcohol use, and sleep medication, both gut microbiome diversity and the specific bacteria present were associated with sleep characteristics.

Why might your gut influence your sleep? 🤔

🧠 The Gut-Brain Axis: Your gut and brain are in constant communication through neural, hormonal, and immune pathways.

🦠 Microbiome & Mood: Gut bacteria participate in the production and regulation of neurotransmitter-related compounds, including pathways involving serotonin.

🔥 Short-Chain Fatty Acids: When beneficial gut bacteria ferment fiber, they produce short-chain fatty acids that influence inflammation, metabolism, &immune function.

And these same systems can influence much more than sleep. Your gut microbiome plays a role in immune regulation, metabolic health, inflammatory signaling, & communication with the nervous system.

This is why at ITW, we don't look at sleep—or any symptom—in isolation.

In our functional medicine approach, we incorporate a comprehensive gut clean-up phase followed by microbiome rebuilding, with the goal of creating a healthier environment for the beneficial microbes your body depends on. 🌿

Because sometimes improving sleep isn't just about what happens when your head hits the pillow. It may also be about what’s happening in your gut. 💚
