Your brain can get injured on this job too.

That’s the conversation more firefighters need to hear. There are resources, protections, therapy, peer support, workers’ comp and people who understand this job. Getting help doesn’t make you weak. It means you’re treating an injury instead of pretending it isn’t there.

Gonzo pushed people away. Told them to leave him alone. But Sam kept showing up until Gonzo finally listened.

Sometimes helping your brother means refusing to take “I’m fine” for an answer.

Check on your people. And don’t give up on them.

You’re not cured. You keep doing the work.

That might be one of the most important parts of Gonzo’s story.

Getting better doesn’t mean the hard days disappear. It means continuing to show up. Continuing to work on yourself. Finding things that challenge you. Talking about the things we usually keep buried.

For Gonzo, that has looked like sobriety, therapy, The Black Helmet Project, boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, training with his crew, rebuilding relationships, and finding his love for the fire service again.

And now he’s preparing to become a dad for the first time.

This was the final part of our conversation in the cold plunge, and I think it says a lot about what recovery actually looks like.

You don’t finish the work. You build a life that makes the work worth doing.

Tomorrow I’ll be running alongside my good friend Joe Stabley in the Wounded Warrior Project Carry Forward 5K.

Joe’s story deserves to be heard, and we’re proud to stand behind him as he continues using it to help other veterans.
