Choosing to be thankful is for your own good; it keeps you from becoming bitter and helps you to finish strong. Being grateful is easy when your emotional tank is full and things are going great. It’s much harder to find something to be thankful for when you're facing a crisis or prolonged chronic stress. But that’s when you need to express gratitude the most. Even in our darkest moments, we can gratefully worship God, knowing that his will for us is to give thanks in all circumstances. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NLT) says, “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”

Researchers tested what its authors call a “calculative mindset,” the habit of running the numbers on things that rarely involve math, such as friendships and favors. Keeping a mental ledger of who paid for the last dinner is one everyday version. Part of that is linked to moral disengagement, a set of mental excuses that let a person go along with a questionable choice without feeling guilty. A calculative mindset may quiet the inner alarm that normally makes cutting corners feel wrong. People with higher calculative scores made more excuses. A questionable choice can start to look rational or necessary, get compared with worse behavior until it seems minor, or get relabeled in businesslike language. Treating coworkers and favors like line items on a balance sheet appeared to make a shortcut at someone else’s expense easier to accept.

Brief exchanges with strangers, whether on a train, at a café counter, or in the grocery line, can be more fulfilling than we expect. A 2022 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found a link between happiness and talking to a variety of people, beyond our immediate circle. Brief, positive interactions with strangers trigger a release of endorphins and other feel-good neurochemicals. One reason interactions with strangers are satisfying is that they tend to spark a sense of novelty. Talking with a new person, even briefly, offers something our usual circle can’t. Fresh conversations can offer a different perspective or new knowledge.

You can’t please everybody in life. The test of maturity is how you handle disagreeable people, people who irritate you. When people disagree with you you can be passive, you can fight them, or you can respond in love, with a gentle answer. General Patton said “You never fight a battle where winning doesn’t make any difference.” Don’t get into an argument over something that doesn’t matter anyway. Romans 14:1 (NIV) says, “Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters.”

A recent study of 202 healthy older adults found that simply being exposed to more light, at the right time, could improve their sleep and energy levels. Those who used a light-therapy lamp each morning showed better sleep-wake patterns and more daytime activity, especially those who weren’t getting much natural daylight to begin with. The eyes contain light-sensitive cells that report directly to the brain regions controlling sleep and wakefulness. It promotes alertness during the day and helps trigger melatonin, the hormone that signals the body it’s time to wind down, in the evening. As we age, changes in the eyes make us less responsive to light. Beginning around 50, the pupil shrinks, and the lens clouds slightly, letting in less of the blue light that the circadian system relies on most. The amount of crucial light reaching the retina can fall by as much as 72% between ages 10 and 80, and this can affect our sleep.

Some book characters refuse to stay on the page. Researchers built and tested a 16-question quiz that measures four sides of the reading imagination: seeing spaces and visuals, hearing language and voice, modeling characters as people, and taking on a reading perspective. A new study finds that this habit of keeping a character alive tends to go hand in hand with something less expected: scoring higher on a standard measure of intrusive, unwanted thoughts. The tie to intrusive thoughts stood out because it appeared in more than one round of the study. These findings challenge the assumption that a strong reading imagination simply means seeing vivid pictures in the mind’s eye. In the end, reading is not one experience but several running side by side, and figuring out which one dominates for a given person may matter for how that person processes stories, memories, and even their own mind.

Our metabolism doesn’t work at the same speed all day—it’s closely tied to our circadian rhythm. Carbohydrate, fat, and energy metabolism are all regulated by the circadian system. In the morning, beta-cell responsiveness, insulin sensitivity, and the thermic effect of food, are higher than in the afternoon or evening. Your body is better equipped to process food earlier in the day. Eating at times that conflict with the body’s circadian rhythm may disrupt metabolic processes and contribute to adverse health outcomes. When good rhythms form, the circadian system optimizes digestion, with many benefits. Eating around 4 to 6 hours before bed was associated with a greater likelihood of getting an optimal amount of sleep. Finishing eating early gives the body time to complete the work of digestion before it shifts into its nighttime state. Then, the body can spend the night carrying out its other normal processes: repairing tissue, regulating immunity, consolidating memory, and clearing waste from the brain.

Emotional exhaustion isn’t new. It’s also not something foreign to the Bible. When life overwhelms you, don’t focus on your problems. Don’t give in to despair. Instead, focus your attention on God himself. Build your life around the character traits of God: God’s Steadfast love; God’s Unfailing mercy; God’s Great faithfulness; God's Always kind; God is my Real hope. Lamentations 3:22-24 (CEV) says, “The Lord’s kindness never fails! If he had not been merciful, we would have been destroyed. The Lord can always be trusted to show mercy each morning. Deep in my heart I say, ‘The Lord is all I need; I can depend on him!’”

Asparagus is famous for one odd side effect, and better sleep isn’t it. Yet a new systematic review found that supplements made from the vegetable tended to improve sleep, with early signs of eased anxiety and sharper attention too. None of these studies served asparagus spears on a dinner plate. Participants took concentrated products, many built around a trademarked enzyme-treated asparagus stem extract called ETAS, along with asparagus powders and foods made with asparagus extract. Asparagus carries plant compounds, including antioxidants called polyphenols, that are known to fight inflammation. It also appears to raise levels of a protective protein called Heat Shock Protein 70, which helps cells cope with stress by preventing protein damage. Sleep was the review’s most consistently positive area. (NOTE: This was a review of other small studies, and not an independent study itself.)

A soda with lunch hardly registers as a health decision. But as little as one cup of soda a week was linked to smaller overall brain surface area in kids under 11. Kids who consumed more caffeine had less brain surface area overall, and the difference appeared in 22 regions across all four lobes, including areas involved in sleep, mood, and self-control. Sugar may play a part too, since the researchers say it could influence brain development, and earlier research links heavy soda drinking to other less healthy habits. (Caffeine, sugar, and lifestyle could not be pulled apart.)
