Candy isn't toxic or poison! Sure, candy is mostly sugar and some other additives, but labeling any food as toxic or poison is extreme and unhelpful to kids. Any food/drink can be harmful in large enough amounts. Nobody is trying to claim that candy is a "health" food or something we eat to get certain nutrients, but all the fear mongering around it is insane. It is one night where kids more than likely are going to eat more candy than they usually do or even a few days and that is OK! Our kids and our own relationship with food is far more important to our overall health and well being. Tips on how to handle this week:
- Eat/feed your kids full regular consistent meals the day of Halloween
- After trick or treating set out a variety of snacks including some options with protein like string cheese, etc. so they can have that while enjoying their candy as well if they would like
- Be aware of how you talk about candy, make it neutral - not good or bad
- Don't use candy as a bribe/reward or punishment
- Give yourself and child space to self regulate around candy and opportunity to have it so Halloween doesn't feel like their only chance
- If the thought of Halloween candy is stressing you out about your kids or your own nutrition think about the BIG picture, this is such a small portion of their overall health and nutrition intake
- If you or your child overeats candy it is okay, it can help them learn from that experience and realize okay eating that amount did not feel good, you can also help and guide them with this

Have fun and Happy Halloween week!!
