🍂 Upstate NY, those farm stand potatoes, squash and greens are doing more than making fall dinners cozy. They're loaded with potassium, a mineral most of us don't get enough of.
Why it matters: Potassium helps your muscles and nerves work, keeps your heart beating in a steady rhythm, and helps balance the effects of sodium on blood pressure. Most adults fall short of the daily target (about 2,600 mg for women and 3,400 mg for men).
Where to find it:
🥔 Potatoes & sweet potatoes (leave the skin on)
🎃 Winter squash like acorn and butternut
🫘 Beans & lentils
🥬 Spinach, Swiss chard & other leafy greens
🍌 Bananas, oranges & dried apricots
🥑 Avocados
🥛 Milk & yogurt
🐟 Salmon
💊 Supplements & medical considerations:
• For most people, food is the best way to get potassium. Supplements and potassium-based "salt substitutes" aren't right for everyone.
• Living with kidney disease? Your kidneys help clear extra potassium, so many people with CKD need a different amount. Some need less, some don't.
• Some medications, including certain blood pressure pills and water pills, can raise or lower potassium levels.
• How much you need should be based on your blood work and guidance from your doctor or dietitian.
Our dietitians can review your diet and labs and help you find the right balance for your body. Many insurance plans, including Medicare, cover nutrition counseling.
