Raw meat and poultry can spread harmful germs to fresh produce and ready-to-eat foods — unless you keep them separate. Always cook meat and poultry until it reaches a safe internal temperature on a digital food thermometer.

MYTH: Once a hamburger turns brown in the middle, it's fully cooked and safe to eat.

FACT: Looking at color and texture is not a reliable way to tell if food is safe to eat. The only way to know that food has been cooked to a safe internal temperature is to use a digital food thermometer.
