What is Norovirus?
Norovirus is the leading cause of foodborne illness in the United States. It spreads easily through contaminated food, water, surfaces, or direct contact with an infected person. Symptoms typically include sudden onset of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and, in some cases, fever and body aches. Symptoms usually resolve within 1 to 3 days, but the virus remains contagious for several days afterward.

Why Are Cases Surging?
Several factors are contributing to the recent increase in cases:
Seasonality: Norovirus is most active during the winter months.
Increased Gatherings: The return to in-person events and gatherings has facilitated easier spread.
Strain Evolution: New norovirus strains may contribute to higher transmission rates and larger outbreaks.

Prevention Strategies
As a highly contagious virus, norovirus requires diligent efforts to reduce its spread. Here are key prevention measures:
Handwashing: Frequent handwashing with soap and water is the most effective way to prevent transmission. Hand sanitizers are less effective against norovirus.
Disinfection: Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces using a bleach-based cleaner.
Food Safety: Practice proper food handling, including washing fruits and vegetables and cooking shellfish thoroughly.
Stay Home: Encourage individuals with symptoms to stay home until at least 48 hours after symptoms subside to avoid spreading the virus.

Looking Ahead
The rise in norovirus cases underscores the importance of maintaining strong public health efforts. By remaining vigilant, sharing accurate information, and supporting local response initiatives, we can help limit the spread of the virus and safeguard our communities.
