“𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼. 𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁?”
It's a question that sounds reasonable.
But does it actually help someone move forward?
Imagine a client who knows they need to make a change but keeps struggling to follow through.
Maybe they need to exercise more, manage stress differently, or create healthier boundaries.
Giving them another strategy might seem like the obvious next step.
But what if the more useful questions are:
→ What tends to get in the way?
→ What have you noticed about when this feels easier or harder?
→ What matters most to you about making this change?
→ What feels realistic in your life right now?
These questions create room for something different.
Reflection. Insight. Clarity.
Instead of immediately telling someone what to do, we help them explore what's happening and discover what might work for them.
**That's an important distinction in coaching.**
We're not only helping people understand what needs to change. We're supporting them as they work out how to make change possible.
What questions help you move a coaching conversation beyond just identifying the what needs to change?
