There's reason for hope when it comes to the treatment of breast cancer. Dr. Melanie Sheen, a breast medical oncologist at Ochsner Cancer Institute, is especially encouraged by the increased availability of innovative therapies for patients with higher-risk breast cancer, such as estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer.

Dr. Guangdi Wang is a cancer researcher at Xavier University of Louisiana and a member of the Louisiana Cancer Research Center faculty. He shared what he considers to be a promising advance for the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). He believes that two relatively new drugs, Trodelvy and Datroway, are especially exciting because they provide new, more targeted treatment options for patients with TNBC, a disease that has had fewer targeted therapies available.

Louisiana Cancer Research Center faculty members regularly share their expertise to strengthen research and expand cancer care across Louisiana. For example, when Tulane Cancer Center surgeon Dr. Kristen Limbach performed the first hepatic arterial infusion pump placement at East Jefferson General Hospital, fellow LCRC faculty member Dr. Kevin Sullivan joined her in the operating room. Sullivan, a surgical oncologist with LSU Health New Orleans is working to establish a similar program at University Medical Center.
