Mindfulness as a practice and strategy to treat and recover from addiction and other mental illnesses is being adopted rapidly by treatment centers and individual practices across the country. It makes clinical as well as logical sense that we would treat the mindlessness of addiction with mindfulness. Mindfulness is the opposite of addiction and thus it is also the most powerful long-term solution.
When we are mindful, we live and behave consciously and with awareness; we are intentional with our choices and our behavior is entirely deliberate; in a word, we are "present." Addiction cannot exist when we are mindful. As to be mindful is to be conscious and to be addicted is to be unconscious, you can only be one or the other, but not both.
