When your child’s progress stalls, the answer isn’t always to add another treatment.

Sometimes, it’s time to step back, reassess, and look at the whole clinical picture.

Today I’m breaking down Ozone Therapy, the different approaches, what parents should consider, and the questions I recommend asking before deciding if it’s appropriate for your child.

📌Save this post for your next conversation with your child’s care team.

On World PANS/PANDAS Day, I’m grateful for the opportunity to keep an important conversation going with Dr. Nancy O’Hara about what it really takes to support children with PANS/PANDAS and complex neuroimmune conditions.

🧩Treating an infection can be an important piece of the puzzle, but it isn’t always the whole picture.

We also have to consider the immune response, inflammation, clearance, genetics, detoxification pathways, and the many individual factors that can influence a child’s health.

💡The good news? Complex does not mean hopeless. The more we understand about what is happening in a child’s body, the more opportunities we have to support that child thoughtfully and individually.

There is hope in looking deeper.
There is hope in continuing to ask questions.
And there is hope in recognizing that progress may come from addressing more than one piece of the puzzle.

Today, our team stands together for PANS/PANDAS Awareness Day — because behind every symptom is a child, behind every worried parent is a family searching for answers, and behind every diagnosis is a human being who deserves to be seen, heard, and cared for.

PANS and PANDAS can bring sudden, life-altering changes in a child’s behavior, emotions, and daily functioning. What may look like defiance, anxiety, or a child “not being themselves” can sometimes be a sign that something deeper is happening.

And that’s why compassion matters.

As a team, we believe our patients deserve more than a checklist of symptoms. They deserve patience when things are difficult, understanding when words fall short, advocacy when answers are hard to find, and hope when the road feels overwhelming.

To the families navigating the uncertainty: we see you. We hear you. We care. You are not defined by the hardest days, and your child is so much more than their symptoms.

Today, we wear our awareness with purpose and carry our compassion into every patient interaction. Because sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is look beyond the behavior, listen without judgment, and remind a family that they are not alone. 💙

Awareness creates understanding. Understanding creates compassion. Compassion can change the way a family experiences care.

Let’s keep talking, keep learning, and keep showing up for our patients with knowledge in our minds and kindness in our hearts!

National PANS/PANDAS Awareness Day.

Your child did not suddenly become a different kid. If the change was overnight, look at the immune system, not just behavior. PANS/PANDAS Awareness Day. Save this for the parents who needs it. Comment “change” if this is your story.

When I’m evaluating a child with Lyme or another vector-borne infection, I’m not just asking, “What pathogen is present?”

I’m asking, “How is this child’s terrain responding to it?”

🧬Different pathogens can affect children in very different ways, and neurological, behavioral, and psychiatric symptoms can be part of the picture.

In my recent ILADS webinar, I discussed what I see in my practice and why understanding the whole child, not just the pathogen, matters when evaluating pediatric vector-borne disease.

Could your child’s health story have started before they were even born?

🤰For families navigating PANS/PANDAS, immune dysfunction, developmental challenges, or unexplained neurological symptoms, the pregnancy and birth history can be an important part of the bigger picture.

Congenital transmission of tick-borne infections is a conversation that deserves more attention, especially when a mother has a history of Lyme or other tick-borne illness.

💡The first step isn’t assuming Lyme is the answer. It’s asking better questions, looking at the whole story, and investigating the factors that may be contributing to a child’s symptoms today.

📌If you’re planning a pregnancy, currently pregnant, or trying to understand your child’s health journey, save this post and share it with your care team.

Families deserve a deeper look at the whole picture.

🔎I closely follow the growing research into the gut-brain connection and what it may teach us about autism.

Researchers are exploring how gut bacteria, metabolites, immune signaling, and neurotransmitter pathways may contribute to different biological patterns in some children with autism.

We’re still learning what these findings mean clinically, but this is exactly why I believe it’s important to look beyond a single explanation and consider the whole child.

🧩The future of care will be increasingly personalized, using biology and individual patterns to help guide the right questions and, ultimately, the right support.
