Sometimes grief looks like crying in the grocery store because your mom’s favorite song came on. Or seeing another mother and daughter shopping together and being reminded of everything you no longer get to do.

In this week’s Grieve Leave Community Blog, Melissa Shierling shares what it’s been like to lose her mom to glioblastoma in April 2024, after years of treatment, hope, and uncertainty.

She writes about the guilt of feeling happy without her mom. The belongings still sitting in storage because going through them hurts too much. The strange experience of wanting desperately to remember someone without every memory bringing you to tears.

And now, as a mother herself, Melissa is figuring out how to make room for joy alongside the grief she knows will always be part of her life.

Because sometimes you want to remember your person and laugh at all their weird stuff. And sometimes you just need to cry in aisle seven. Both can be true.

Thank you, Melissa, for trusting our community with your story and sharing so much of your mom with us. 💛

Could it be checking on the car next to you at the stoplight, knowing full well that your dad is dead, because it was the model your dad drove, just to make sure it’s not him driving? We’re just wondering.

Kinda chic to talk about grief in cocktail attire, if you ask us!🍸🩷

Last night, we gathered at CHEENI — Durham with our friends at Equity Before Birth for Joy, Grief & Motherhood: an evening of good food, great company, and honest conversations about the joy, grief, and everything in between that can come with pregnancy and motherhood.

We intentionally held this event on Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, because celebrating motherhood should never mean ignoring the grief that can be part of it, too. And because these conversations deserve to happen outside of doctor’s offices, support groups, and hushed whispers.

A HUGE thank you to everyone who showed up, shared their stories, listened, laughed, and helped make this night so special. To Chef Preeti Waas (Preeti Waas) and the Cheeni team for welcoming us and feeding us so beautifully, to our incredible partners at Equity Before Birth (Equity Before Birth) for the work they do supporting North Carolina families, and to Senator Natalie Murdock (Natalie Murdock) for joining us and lending her voice to the conversation.

Here’s to more evenings where joy and grief are both invited to the party. 🤍🩷

Ben Affleck shared that he was so used to a three-act structure in movies that he expected life to neatly play out that way too. And then both of his parents died this year, and he’s learned that grief is so much messier than that. Thank you for speaking up and making space for real conversations about grief and life One More Question with Zach Baron 💙

Today, October 15, is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. And we need to talk about all the parts of this grief that people are still way too uncomfortable acknowledging.

The physical recovery. The milestones that will never happen. The baby shower invitations that suddenly hurt to open. The friends who stop checking in because they don’t know what to say. The expectation that you’ll somehow return to work and life as usual.

And the way people STILL minimize pregnancy loss based on how many weeks someone was pregnant.

Pregnancy and infant loss can be physically painful, emotionally devastating, medically complicated, and profoundly isolating. And for far too many people, it’s met with silence.

October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, and today, people around the world are remembering babies who died during pregnancy or infancy. At 7 PM local time, families and communities are invited to participate in the International Wave of Light by lighting a candle in remembrance.

But acknowledging these losses shouldn’t be limited to one day in October.

We can do better at showing up. At saying babies’ names. At recognizing parents’ grief. At making room for conversations that might feel uncomfortable.

If you’ve experienced pregnancy or infant loss, what’s something you wish more people understood? We’re listening. 🩷💙

And if someone you love has experienced this kind of loss, swipe through. There’s probably something here they wish you knew.
