Day 2 : The Weight You Didn’t Choose
There’s a particular exhaustion that doesn’t come from doing too much. It comes from carrying too much weight you never agreed to hold. The anticipation of someone else’s mood. The management of someone else’s ego. The performance of being fine so no one else has to deal with the fact that you’re not.
I call this encumbrance. It’s not the same as stress, and it’s not the same as being busy. It’s the accumulated weight of self-abandonment, of years spent shrinking, translating, absorbing, and adjusting yourself around other people’s comfort. And the maddening thing about encumbrance is that it’s invisible to everyone, including you, until you finally set a piece of it down and feel how much lighter you are without it.
This series is about identifying that weight, piece by piece, and putting it down deliberately, one day at a time, because you cannot set down what you haven’t first named.
Mantra: “I did not choose this weight, but I choose to set it down.”
Gratitude: One moment today you felt even slightly lighter.
