IT Manager Romie Grant and Chief Development and Communications Officer John Williams spent the afternoon in conversation with tenants at East 11th, listening and learning about how Community Access can communicate in ways that are respectful, inclusive, and representative of the people and communities we serve.

The conversation was part of our ongoing DEIA communications work — and an important reminder that the best place to start is by listening to the people at the heart of our community.

Alice in Wonderland has a connection to Community Access! 🐇✨

Between 1938 and 1940, artist Abram Champanier created murals for the children’s ward at Gouverneur Hospital, imagining Alice and her fellow characters exploring New York City. That historic building has been home to Community Access’ Gouverneur Court since 1992.

Created to bring color, imagination, and joy to children receiving care, these murals are part of the history of a building where our work in supportive housing continues today.

Now, after a massive restoration effort, you can experience these magnificent murals in “Another Wonderland: Abram Champanier’s Alice Mural” at the Museum of the City of New York.

Visit through October 12 and discover a beautiful piece of New York history—and a connection to our own. 💙

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

At Community Access, we’re celebrating by sharing another story from Nuestra Comunidad: Stories in Our Own Words—our series creating space for Spanish-speaking tenants and program participants to share their experiences, perspectives, and hopes in the language most natural to them.

Today, we’re proud to introduce our next Nuestra Comunidad story. Told in Spanish with an English translation, it’s another opportunity to listen, learn, and get to know the people who make up our community a little better. ✨💙

For Bill McKeithan and Dan Freidmutter, trust and connection are at the heart of their work. 💙

Bill brings decades of experience in mental health services and a deep commitment to supporting both participants and staff. When Dan joined Community Access five years ago as a recent college graduate, Bill quickly recognized his willingness to learn and grow.

Over the years, they have worked side by side building relationships with participants rooted in respect, patience, and trust. Their own relationship has grown, too. Bill encouraged Dan to pursue his master’s in social work and supported him as he earned his license.

“The most meaningful moments are when people see their own progress and realize they have the power to create positive change in their lives,” says Dan.

A meaningful night of film, storytelling, and positive conversations about mental health! 💚

It was a privilege for Community Access and our Changing Minds program to be invited to participate in the United Nations General Assembly Healing Arts Week (UNGA).

Conversations about mental health matter, and the stories we share through Changing Minds keep making a big difference in challenging stigma.

A special thank you to our host Mikel Morado and guests, Nils Fietje, Co-Founder of and Technical Officer of World Health Organization Europe (), Elizabeth Bahr of , and Filmmakers .by.dani & .

Grateful for the partners who made this event possible: & The Pixley Hill Foundation and the Isora Foundation.

Our own Mikel Morado joined BronxNet Community Television to share what makes the Changing Minds Young Filmmakers Festival so special: creating opportunities for young filmmakers as they find their footing in the world of film. 🎬💙

We’re proud to see Changing Minds alumni making their mark in the industry, and we’re excited to keep opening doors for young artists to tell their stories, build their skills, and imagine what comes next.
