“When should I come in for my postpartum assessment?”

This is a common question we get and here’s our answer:

Come in before delivery! We can assess your pelvic floor and address any musculoskeletal restrictions to set you up for a smooth delivery and recovery. Birth can be unpredictable, but having a better understanding of your body can yield a better experience during your labor, delivery, and recovery!

We’ll teach you how to:

➰connect to your pelvic floor in a healthy way (no gripping!)

➰how to push using breath and your upper body, (your pelvic floor doesn’t shoot the baby out!)

➰best prepare you for the early postpartum days by reviewing safe movements

➰give you info on how to best manage your body if things don’t go according to your plan (ie: c-section, instrument assisted delivery, postpartum orthopedic/pelvic pain).

And if you can’t make it in prior, we can guide you via telehealth or in person during your early postpartum days. You don’t need to wait 6 weeks to seek care for your concerns. Intervening early can set you up for a better recovery! You’ve got this!

Male sexual dysfunction is common and often the result of pelvic floor coordination issues. Pelvic PT can help with pain, ED, and premature ej*******on. Your pelvic muscles synchronize to allow for full sexual appreciation. Restoring proper length and tone will improve function, sensation, and reduce pain.

What to expect in a birth prep pelvic floor physical therapy session:

A baseline assessment of your pelvic floor mobility, range of motion, and coordination (an internal exam)

A review and practice of pushing strategies, labor and delivery positions (ensuring you can lengthen your pelvic muscles!)

A review of some early postpartum movements that can begin prior to your six week mark (childcare is hard on the body!)

Information & options = empowerment!

“Key in door” urgency and incontinence…

is the phenomenon of suddenly needing to empty your bladder upon arriving home

if your runway time to make it to the bathroom is getting shorter, you can get ahead of it before it becomes more problematic (large leaks)

Pelvic PT is the solve! (and yes, you can use our bathroom to empty your bladder before visits!)

Endometriosis

- 1 in 10 individuals with a uterus of reproductive age lives with this condition (likely more prevalent due to it being under-diagnosed)

- is most commonly diagnosed in women in their 30s and 40s, but is present during the reproductive years

- can be a primary cause of infertility

- is often a delayed diagnosis, which prolongs suffering

- excision surgery is the current intervention, coupled with hormone management

- pelvic floor dysfunction is present and feeds into the pain cycle

- pelvic health physical therapy is an essential treatment adjunct to surgery and for all those seeking a nonsurgical option

- pain management should include medications to reduce suffering and tension (injections can help the pelvic floor and nerves calm down)

- surgery addresses the lesions but not the dysfunction. Get a team to help you navigate your recovery.

Fascia, our full body connective network…

It helps transmit force across the body, supports organs, contains nerve fibers helping the body register pain and feel movement, and allows muscles to glide properly.

Headache? Back ache? Stiff joints? Endometriosis? C-section scar? Pregnant? All will impact your fascia and physical therapy can help.

Traveling this holiday season?
Here’s some things to remember if you’re experiencing pain or pelvic floor issues:

- stay hydrated (drink extra water and even more when consuming alcohol)

- keep moving (you’ll be seated on your flight, avoid sitting in the terminal before boarding)

- minimize your stress response (expect delays and use deep breathing techniques to keep calm and relax tight muscles)

- plan your movement (get in time to exercise and do your PT routine, you’ll feel better!)

- listen to your body’s cues to empty your bladder and bowels (even if on a plane). Delaying can lead to constipation and difficulty emptying.

- Lastly, enjoy your time with loved ones! 💗
