talking about an East village legendary institution alive in the city for over a century.
132 years to be exact. The Russian Turkish Baths at 268 East 10th Street New York New York.
A place of healing, cleansing and wellness.
An ever electric changing community. an open-hearted and unsophisticated walk back to another era.
Complete with cement saunas heated to 200 degrees, where you take a schvitz. A 40° ice pool to revive the radiator that was once your body afterward.
Where hulking Russian men beat you with soapy oak leaf branches called a platza, and scrub you with sea salt. Mud baths. Soap washes. Massage.
Afterward, a bowl of borscht or bottle of beer before heading out, pink and fresh to the thriving neighborhood that was once the home of hundreds of Ukrainian and Jewish immigrants through the turn of the century, and Punk Rockers of the 1980âs.
Much has changed in the East Village that the baths has largely ignored. And itâs glorious.

This is the banya. A cultural, therapeutic, cleansing, healing and communal experience where people come together to get healthy, relax, heal, connect, unwind, sometimes sing, socialize and talk about the deeper things in life.
