Most people think acid reflux is about too much acid.

Josh Dech works with people on severe gut conditions and he sees it differently.

In many cases, particularly the cases that have not responded to standard treatment, the issue is not excess acid. It is what is happening with the entire digestive ecosystem. The microbiome. The motility. The gut barrier.

Acid is often a downstream result, not the origin.

Could high blood sugar affect your reflux?

According to Eloise, Gastroenterologist & Gut Health Expert, chronically high blood sugar can activate stress pathways, slow gastric emptying, and disrupt normal gut motility.

When food stays in the stomach longer, intragastric pressure can increase, which may be one piece of the bigger picture when understanding digestive symptoms.

Sometimes, looking at reflux means looking beyond just stomach acid and understanding how digestion and gut motility fit into the picture.

These foods may be triggering your reflux.

If you have GERD, you've probably heard a long list of foods you're “supposed” to avoid.

But knowing why certain foods may trigger symptoms can be more useful than simply memorizing a forbidden-food list.

According to Talayeh Tabriz, MS, RDN, Expert in Digestive Disorders, some foods commonly worth watching include:

☕ Caffeinated & carbonated drinks — including coffee and soda
🍫 Chocolate — especially concentrated chocolate like brownies or dark chocolate
🍷 Alcohol
🍅 Tomato & tomato-based products
🌶️ Spicy foods
🍔 Heavy, high-fat foods — which can slow digestion and potentially contribute to symptoms

That doesn't mean every person with reflux will react to every food on this list.

The goal isn't to fear food. It's to understand your own triggers and patterns.

Food shouldn’t be something you’re afraid of.

With endless food rules and conflicting advice online, it’s easy to become confused about what you “should” and “shouldn’t” eat, especially when you’re dealing with digestive issues.

Talayeh Tabriz, MS, RDN, Expert in Digestive Disorders, points out that one of the biggest challenges she sees is people losing the joy around food and developing a difficult relationship with eating.

Another common misconception? Jumping straight to supplements without first looking at the bigger picture.
Your dietary habits, eating behaviors, and relationship with food are all worth looking at too.
If you've been dealing with reflux or digestive symptoms, instead of asking only:

“What food do I need to eliminate?”
It may also be worth asking:

“How is my relationship with food?”
You don’t have to live in fear of your next meal.

When it comes to reflux, it can be easy to focus entirely on what you're eating.

But sometimes, the habits surrounding your meals may also be worth paying attention to.

Here are 7 habits to look at if you're dealing with reflux:

1. Eating too fast
Rushing through meals can affect how you eat and how you notice your body's signals. Try slowing down and giving yourself more time with your meal.

2. Not chewing properly
If you're constantly rushing through bites, slow down and chew your food thoroughly instead of treating mealtime like something you need to get over with.

3. Drinking things that are too hot or too cold
If you notice very hot or cold drinks seem to trigger or worsen your reflux symptoms, take note. Your individual response matters.

4. Constantly changing your diet
Trying a new reflux diet every week can make it almost impossible to figure out what's actually affecting your symptoms. Give yourself time to observe patterns.

5. Not tracking your own patterns
Instead of following a generic “reflux food list,” pay attention to what you ate, when you ate it, and when your symptoms showed up.

6. Eating too close to bedtime
If nighttime reflux is an issue for you, your evening meal timing may be worth looking at. Notice what happens when you give yourself more time between eating and lying down.

7. Focusing only on food
Reflux isn't necessarily just about the food on your plate. Meal timing, sleep, stress, and daily habits can all be part of the bigger picture.

The goal isn't to be afraid of food or eliminate everything.

It's to understand your own reflux patterns and make changes that you can actually maintain.

Save this before you decide to cut another food from your diet.

What if your relationship with food is part of the problem?

With so much information on social media, eating has become surprisingly confusing.

What should you eat? What should you avoid? Which supplement should you take?

Talayeh Tabriz, MS, RDN, points out that one of the biggest challenges she sees in digestive disorders is people jumping to supplements before looking at the basics, their dietary habits, eating behaviors, and relationship with food.

Because food isn’t supposed to feel like something to fear.

Before adding another supplement, it may be worth asking: How is my relationship with food?

Could stress be making your hiatal hernia symptoms worse?

Stress doesn’t just affect how you feel mentally it can also influence your nervous system.

David Weinstock, Founder of NeuroKinetics Therapy, explains how stress can overstimulate the sympathetic nervous system and why stimulating the vagus nerve and activating the parasympathetic nervous system may be important.

If you’re dealing with reflux or a hiatal hernia, understanding the nervous system may be another piece worth exploring.

Reflux doesn't always feel like what people expect. Some people report symptoms beyond the classic burning sensation, which can make it difficult to connect the dots.

The important part? A symptom alone doesn't prove reflux is the cause. It's about understanding the bigger picture and discussing persistent symptoms with the right professional.

Think reflux always means heartburn? Not necessarily.

Here are 7 symptoms that can be associated with reflux:

1. A chronic cough that won't seem to go away
2. Constant throat clearing
3. A strange feeling that something is stuck in your throat
4. Hoarseness or changes in your voice
5. Throat irritation or burning
6. A sour taste or regurgitation
7. Symptoms that seem worse at night

But here's the important part: having one of these symptoms doesn't automatically mean reflux is the cause. There can be different reasons for these symptoms, which is why understanding the bigger picture matters.

If you've been experiencing persistent or concerning symptoms, bring them up with a qualified healthcare professional.

Save this if you've been trying to connect the dots.

Raoul Dusterhus is a speech and language pathologist who specialises in LPR and voice-related reflux.

He describes a type of reflux in his interview that most people have never heard of and that standard reflux testing often misses entirely.

It presents differently. It does not always cause heartburn. And it is often treated as something else entirely for years before anyone makes the connection.
