In order to accomplish a natural appearance, I feel that it is important to have my patients provide younger photos of t
hemselves. As our faces age, even though we may not like the facial aging process, at least the aging itself is natural. So our faces at 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and so on, without any injections or surgeries always appears natural. What does not appear natural, is when one part of the face is tight and wrinkle-free and the other areas still have some wrinkles, folds and sagging. To truly achieve a natural appearance, it makes sense to try to use younger photos to "double-check" whether certain wrinkles/sagging were already there at a certain age. This also provides a more realistic expectation for achievable results. During my facial plastic surgery training, we were told tell patients that they will not actually look younger, but more refreshed, and less tired. As our faces age, and loses fullness and volume, the skin around the face can sag and wrinkle. To surgically nip and tuck the loose skin which is a result of loss of volume will not achieve a younger appearance, only more refreshed. For some patients, looking refreshed is good enough, but for more discerning patients, which are typically the patients who seek my expertise, they may feel the refreshed look doesn't look natural.
