When my daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis this is what happened

I’ll never forget that day. We went for an xray because she was complaining about her ribs hurting after she fell from riding her scooter.
The xray showed a mild s curve & I panicked. I asked the doctor what they knew about this, they didn’t.
We found an orthopedic who wanted her braced & doing schroth 3x a week. What was schroth i thought to myself. Looking it up, i saw pictures of what my orthopedic said i would look like if i didn’t have surgery. It felt like my story was repeating in my daughter’s body. I was going to do whatever it took to change her scoliosis story. I got the schroth book. She went to her schroth specialist 2x a week. I learned the exercises. We did them the other 5 days.
Time went by & it payed off. Her curves decreased.
She didn’t have surgery. She had support.
Doing schroth gave her not just a stronger body, it gave long term strength. She has a foundation of exercise’s.
She learned how to move with her curves. She increased her core strength. She was empowered learning strength training exercises that she could safely do.

If you’ve been through Scoliosis surgery, you know what it comes with. The uncertainty on the other side, the physical pain, a new body....

Have lived with Scoliosis spinal fusion for over 30 years, here are 3 things I would do if I had to start over again.

1- Shut out the negative noise. There is so much negativity around Scoliosis surgery about the what if’s. Scoliosis surgery is traumatizing enough.

2-Give myself praise for doing the small things. Small things turn into big things, which can turn into amazing things.

3- I would understand that it’d wasn’t my fault. Gilt can play a big part in our Scoliosis journey. Caring a bag on one side (as my parents were told), doesn’t mean your curve will increase.

All these negatives can easily drive us into a spiral. I’ve lived with a Scoliosis spinal fusion for 30+ years & I remember the darkness of my younger self. All the difficulties that came along with getting used to my new spine. What I have learned along the way is that I have best posture & strong muscles to support my spine.
When I’m teaching a Scoliosis Spinal fusion class, I am reminded of my spinal limitations & I can laugh at them.
I learned long ago to not let the negative weigh me down but to accept & honor the positive. Once I made the choice to have a different mind set, it got easier. So if your Scoliosis journey feels, hard I hope these lessons help.
Make sure you’re following along.
