Why would acupuncture make sense for a penguin?

Needling stimulates nerves in the skin and muscle, which may change how the nervous system processes pain signals. That mechanism isn’t unique to humans, which is why veterinary acupuncture is used for aging animals with pain and mobility problems, often alongside conventional care, just as it was here.

At Morningside Acupuncture, we apply the same principle every day with runners, athletes, musicians, dancers, and desk workers. As part of a broader plan, needling may help reduce pain and support better movement.

No flippers required. Book through the link in our bio.

One reason ear acupuncture is often paired with neck and shoulder work for stress is that several points on the ear sit along the auricular branch of the vagus nerve, the nerve most responsible for shifting your body out of fight-or-flight.

Research has found that stimulating these points may regulate both the autonomic and central nervous systems.

😌 Save this if your shoulders live up by your ears.

Your core is a deep, layered system of muscles, fascia, and connective tissue.

E-stim reaches muscles that are hard to access with stretching or foam rolling alone.

Do you have a tight core that never fully releases? Book your session 🍎. We would be happy to help you.🌞 https://www.morningsideacupuncturenyc.com/new-patients

Most runners try to stretch the IT band itself, but the pain often isn't coming from the band. It can be driven by overloaded muscles feeding into it, mainly the TFL, glute medius, and vastus lateralis, especially as training mileage builds.

Dry needling targets those muscles directly and may help take pressure off the band and the knee.

Most hamstring strains are not evenly distributed across the muscle group. The biceps femoris accounts for the majority of them.

As the only hamstring muscle that crosses both the hip and the knee, it undergoes extreme lengthening and shortening with every stride. This makes it uniquely vulnerable to strain during sprinting and sudden acceleration.

The levator scapulae and upper trapezius both run from the neck to the shoulder, and together they're often behind that stubborn knot people try to dig out with their fingers.

Trigger points here cause a stiff neck that worsens when turning the head, along with pain extending into the shoulder blade and upper back. It's especially common in desk workers and anyone who spends long hours looking down at a phone or screen.

Dry needling both muscles together may reduce referred pain and restore normal neck rotation.

Peroneal tendonitis often gets treated as a tendon problem alone. Sometimes the real issue is that the muscles controlling the tendon aren't firing properly.

The peroneus brevis, longus, and tertius stabilize the outer ankle and control foot eversion with every stride. When inhibited, the tendon takes on more strain, and the injury tends to recur.

In this session we're using dry needling with e-stimulation to re-establish the connection between the nervous system and these muscles, not just release tension.

Common in runners, court-sport athletes, and high foot arches.

Runners who stay ahead build treatment into their plan. This looks like dry needling from weeks 6-10 to catch trigger points before they escalate, treatment for anything that flares up along the way, and 1-2 sessions during the taper.

Rest alone won't clear a trigger point, even three weeks of it. It needs to be treated directly.

Runners who follow this schedule tend to reach the start line with less built-up tension and may finish stronger than their training alone would predict.

Patellofemoral pain syndrome, commonly called runner's knee, causes diffuse pain around the kneecap and is common in runners, jumpers, and anyone ramping up training volume quickly.

And there's research to back it up: in a combined analysis, dry needling produced significant pain relief for PFPS specifically, while knee osteoarthritis and postoperative pain groups did not show the same short-term benefit. Because PFPS is largely a muscular pain syndrome, it responds particularly well to trigger point needling.

Dry needling won't replace strengthening work, but it can make that work more accessible by reducing pain enough to train through it.
