The Manhattan Adult ADD Support Group is pleased to present the following lecture on Thursday May 18, 2023 from 6-8pm EDT on Zoom.

"Neurodivergence" and Corporate Hiring: A Recruitment Revolution? w/ Michael S. Bernick, Esq. co-author, The Autism Full Employment Act: The Next Stage of Jobs for Adults with Autism, ADHD, and Other Learning and Mental Health Differences

Who is fit to hold a job?

Of late, ideas on this have shifted. Or so it would seem.

Most striking: a verbal commitment to hire, and keep, candidates who -- before -- were rarely considered. Like those with autism or dyslexia or ADHD. In some quarters, these are viewed as expressions of "neurodivergence" (or "neurodiversity"). Variations, that is, on what's normal.

Also emerging: an ecosystem of advocates -- and coaches, consultants, trainers, recruiters, journalists, lawyers, academics, hospital workers, and human-resources personnel -- who are willing to act as intermediaries. Or cheerleaders.

On May 18, connecting some dots will be Michael S. Bernick, who is a Special Counsel with the San Francisco-based law firm of Duane Morris LLP.

Bernick is also a columnist for Forbes, where he writes about "emerging employment structures, policy and law"; a Fellow at both the Milken Institute and the Burning Glass Institute; and the research director of the California Workforce Association.

The Manhattan Adult ADD Support Group is please to present the following lecture on Thursday March 23, 2023 From 6:00 to 8:00 PM EST.
Cannabis, CBD & ADHD w/ Mariely Hernandez, PhD.
Despite its shifting legal status, cannabis -- also known as ma*****na -- has long been popular within the ADHD community. With widespread decriminalization, that appetite is expected to grow.
This in the face of research-based arguments -- that cannabis can interfere with brain maturation; that it can limit cognitive development; that it can cause respiratory or cardiovascular distress; that it can addict -- against such use.
In recent years, a counterargument has emerged, largely from user experience.
Cannabis, it's said, can promote sleep (a perennial issue for those with ADHD). Others say it can soothe chronic pain (often elevated in persons with ADHD). Or help with anxiety (a common co-existing condition); including that brought on by stimulant medication.
Meanwhile, some of these same effects have been reported for a cannabis derivative -- cannabidiol, or CBD oil -- that can also be readily obtained.
On March 23, explore this topic with psychologist Mariely Hernandez. Dominican-born, and Bronx-raised, she earned a doctorate in clinical psychology at the City College of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center.

The work leading up to that degree, which focused on addiction-related issues, was funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse. Her recent scholarship brings in ADHD as well, particularly in racially diverse college students.
Dr. Hernandez plans to investigate the origin, course, and spreading of these phenomena across the lifespan (and beyond). As such, she's currently a post-doctoral fellow at the Center for Intergenerational Psychiatry at the uptown complex now known as the Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
She writes that "the point is not to be dream-crushers but to investigate drug effects so that users can make informed decisions."

The Manhattan Adult ADD Support Group is pleased to sponsor the following lecture:
Healthy Eating For Adults with ADD/ADHD w/ Nicole DeMasi Malcher, RDN, CDCES
Thursday February 16, 2023 From 6:00 -8:00 PM EST
Tired of emotional eating, recreational eating, or out-and-out binge eating?
Bothered by numbers that put you in the range of overweight ... or high cholesterol ... or diabetes ... or kidney disease?
Or: maybe the shoe is on the other foot. Feel worn down by this diet, or that weight-loss regimen?
In short: is there a middle ground between self-abuse and self-deprivation? Is there hope of attaining some control?
Especially when ADHD -- with its shortage of executive functioning -- is part of the picture?
On February 16, hear dietician and nutritionist Nicole DeMasi Malcher share what she's learned from working with "hundreds of different types of clients" with every conceivable need.
Nicole completed a dietetic internship at California State University, Northridge, in 2013. That same year, she gained board-certification in dietetics and nutrition.
The next year, Nicole earned an MS in nutritional science, again from CSU Northridge.
Elsewhere, she's been certified in diabetes care and education; as well as in motivational interviewing, a technique used in counseling and coaching.

To register, please send an E mail to: [email protected] (please include your first name & E mail address).

The Manhattan Adult ADD Support Group Is Pleased To Present The Following Lecture:
An Integrative Approach to ADHD Treatment w/ Lidia Zylowska, MD
Tuesday, January 24, 2023 From 7:00 – 9:00 PM EST
ADHD is more than just a matter of genes or wiring. Outside issues -- physical health, lifestyle, sense of self, stress levels, relationships, environment -- factor in as well.
And shape how we think about treatment. To cultivate a broader sense of wellbeing, many with ADHD combine the usual with an "alternative" or "holistic" or "complementary" approach.
Such as dosing on micronutrients (zinc, iron, magnesium); or botanical supplements (Korean red ginseng, ginkgo biloba, pycnogenol, bacopa monnieri); or adaptogens (ashwagandha, rhodiola rosea).
Or -- through the use of probiotics -- tending to the "brain-gut axis." Or setting up a regimen of stress management (mindfulness training, habit training) or mind-body alignment (exercise, breathwork, acupuncture).
Our presenter, psychiatrist Lidia Zylowska, earned a medical degree at the Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. She followed this with a stint at UCLA's Center for Psychoneuroimmunology.
To register for this lecture, please send an E mail to: [email protected] (please include your first name & E mail address).

The Manhattan Adult ADD Support Group is pleased to present the following lecture on Thursday November 17, 2022 from 8:00 -10:00 PM EST on Zoom.

Five Essential ADHD Relationship Strategies w/ Gina Pera
No romantic coupling is easy. Throw in ADHD, and things can get ... interesting.

On the one hand, you have the dual-ADHD relationship, where both partners have ADHD.

On the other, you have the mixed relationship, where only one has ADHD.

Some like the first type, saying there's more understanding ... and more of a ride.

While others prefer the stability -- and safety -- of the second.
On November 17, we'll hear from writer, journalist, and support-group leader Gina Pera. Pera is the author of the classic Is It You, Me or Adult ADD? (2008). She is the co-author of Adult ADHD-Focused Couple Therapy: Clinical Interventions (2016).

The Manhattan Adult ADD Support Group will have its next lecture on Thursday October 20, 2022 at 06:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) on Zoom: The topic will be: ADHD & Anxiety In Adults. Our presenter will be Psychologist Sharon Saline, PSYD.

Since the pandemic, ADHD diagnoses have risen steeply. While anxiety levels have gone through the roof.

Where does ADHD end, and anxiety begin? Can certain symptoms show up in either? If both disorders are present, can the combination pack an extra punch?

Tough questions, but our presenter is among the best.
Psychologist Sharon Saline works with kids, families and adults. She specializes in ADHD and learning issues.

A prolific writer, she's the author two books: The ADHD Solution Card Deck; and What Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew. Her work appears in ADDitude, Psychology Today, Your Tango, and elsewhere.

Dr. Saline also leads workshops -- across the world -- on such subjects as executive functioning; different kinds of learners; the teenage brain; and our upcoming topic: anxiety.

The Manhattan Adult Attention Deficit Disorder Support Group will have its next Lecture on Thursday September 22, 2022 at 8:00 PM (NYC Time) on Zoom.

Stimulants: Side Effects , Warning Signs w/ John Kruse, MD, PhD
Stimulant meds -- Adderall, Ritalin and other preparations -- can relieve ADHD symptoms.

But what's potent enough to do something you want can be potent enough to do something you do not want. This is true of any pharmaceutical.

With stimulants, adverse effects can range from relatively mild (appetite suppression, sleep loss) to severe (addiction, psychosis). With much in between.

Joining us to discuss these will be psychiatrist John Kruse, who has practiced psychiatry, in San Francisco, for 28 years. During this time he has seen a steady stream of adults with ADHD.

Dr. Kruse is the author of Recognizing Adult ADHD: What Donald Trump Can Teach Us About Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (2019). He blogs on a regular basis and is active on YouTube.

The Manhattan Adult ADD Support Group is pleased to present the following lecture (On Zoom): Adulting With Impact (without burning out) W/ Elaine Taylor-Klaus, PCC, CPCC

Thursday June 23, 2022 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM

How to take charge of your busy and complicated brain ... and get things done?

Being ruthless in how you prioritize can conserve time and energy. Setting up systems that are simple (and viable) can do the same. A planner or calendar can serve as an essential tool. And behavioral support -- such as through coaching -- can help you stay on an even keel while you set goals and find what works for you.

Still, does the thought of making just one more decision wear you out? And yes: dealing with ADHD can cause burnout (a state of mental and/or physical exhaustion brought on by prolonged stress). Which, in turn, can magnify ADHD symptoms.

When it comes to the above, our presenter -- coach and parenting expert Elaine Taylor-Klaus -- has been there and done that. At one time, she was an overwhelmed, anxious stay-at-home mom with three complex kids. Then she found out (at around 40) about her own learning and attention challenges. Traits that (with some help) she learned to manage.

Now, Elaine is the co-founder and CEO of the internet-based ImpactParents.com, which provides affordable training and coaching to parents and professionals. She's also the author of The Essential Guide to Raising Complex Kids with ADHD, Anxiety, and More; and the co-author of Parenting ADHD Now!

For an adult, managing ADHD is a journey. Which, on June 23, we'll explore ... in a lively, interactive, solution-oriented session.

We have two ways you can register. You can send an E mail to: [email protected] (please include your first name & E mail addy), or, you can send an E mail to:

ManhattanAdultADDSupportGroup+[email protected]. We manage a discussion forum centered around ADD/ADHD & all of the related issues. All Zoom links are posted in our forum. There is no charge to join.

This is the "other" ADHD: the Predominantly Inattentive counterpart to the better-known Hyperactive variant.

Those with this "quieter" version of ADHD -- often detected later in life -- are less restless or impulsive or volatile. But they can struggle on other fronts.

Our May 26 presenter will be the well-known psychologist Mary V. Solanto.

Dr Solanto teaches pediatrics and psychiatry at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. (On the Hofstra University campus in Uniondale, NY.) Before that, she taught at NYU; and for many years ran the ADHD clinic at Mount Sinai.

The Manhattan Adult ADD Support Group is pleased to present the following lecture on Thursday, April 28th at 6:00 PM (On Zoom):

ADHD in the Workplace: A Look at Legal Issues w/ Susan Yellin, Esq.

What are your rights -- and responsibilities -- as an employee?

How is an employer required to act when told that an employee has ADHD? Which, at times, can complicate a job situation? Depending on the circumstances, what arrangements might be made? What accommodations could be available?

On April 28, we'll look at the relevant legal landscape. In the process, you'll gain an idea of how US law -- and particularly the Americans With Disabilities Act -- deals with ADHD at work.

Our presenter, Susan Yellin, has been a practicing New York attorney for over 25 years. She has extensive experience in legal issues related to education and special education. Currently Mrs. Yellin works with families to obtain school services -- or search for appropriate school settings -- for K-12 students. This in her role as Director of Advocacy and Transition Services at the Manhattan-based Yellin Center for Mind, Brain and Education.

Hello πŸ™‚
I am currently doing my masters research project which aims to explore whether visual aids such as scientific illustrations can help to increase the accessibility of science information for adults with ADHD and dyslexia.
If you have the time and fulfil the participant requirements below, I would be extremely grateful if you could complete my research survey (it should take about 10 minutes).
Participant requirements:
- Age 18-45
- Is interested in science but does not actively seek it out
- Has a diagnosis of ADHD and/or dyslexia
- Also looking for neurotypical participants as a control group
If you know of anyone who would be able to complete this survey, please feel free to share it!
Please get in touch if you have any questions.
Thank you πŸ’š

Hi everyone,

I’m a researcher at the University of Nottingham conducting a survey to explore parents’ views of home-schooling during the Covid-19 pandemic. We are also interested in whether mental health or developmental conditions in parents or their children influence experiences of home schooling. We hope that our survey will provide useful information that can give insights into parental experiences and can help guide school’s provision of support if we face a similar situation in the future.

If you would like to take part in the survey, you can access it by clicking this link:
https://www.soscisurvey.de/HomeschoolingEnglish/

The first screen will tell you more about the survey, what is required of you, and how we will protect your data. It should take around 20-30 minutes to complete and is completely anonymous.

If you have any questions about the survey, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for reading this post!

Hi, I woul like to share my story and that of my son who was only diagnosed with ADD at the age of 15. We had struggled for many years with his inability to concentrate, his mood changes and lack of motivation. Teacher thought, he was simply too stubid to achieve good grades - the contrary was the case but no one was able to help and we felt completely alone. This is one post from my blog where I write about my stress at home and at work which ended with a life threatening emergency operation from which I nearly died last year. https://www.theheartknows.org/emotinality-after-nde-and-sons-attention-deficit-disorder-and-school-problems/https://www.theheartknows.org/emotinality-after-nde-and-sons-attention-deficit-disorder-and-school-problems/
Dear friends, I would like to share part of my story and that of my son - he was not correctly diagnosed until he was 15 and both our life had been traumatic and extremely stressful. We were happy when finally a doctor got to the bottom of his behaviour but even though, my son is still struggling to live a happy life, he is 20 now and medication is not really helping. The story about his ADD https://www.theheartknows.org/emotinality-after-nde-and-sons-attention-deficit-disorder-and-school-problems/ is part of my blog and description of my life threatening and life changing emergency situation.
Hello, all--As a reporter for a national classroom magazine, I'm looking to interview high school students with ADHD; I was told by the moderator to post here. I'd like to connect with the parent/guardian of any interested teens beforehand. For more information, please contact me directly at [email protected] before Friday, 10/18. Thanks very much.
