Did you catch our latest episode on what helps kids thrive and stay safe at the same time?

I talked about three psychological needs that shape how children grow into confident, grounded adults. As it turns out, the same three needs make a child far less vulnerable to people who would want to harm them.

The conversation covers autonomy, competence, and belonging in practical terms. I share a simple everyday example that shows how these play out in real life.

Parenting choices and safety are more connected than they seem.

Have you ever wondered where to draw the line between setting boundaries for your kids and giving them room to explore?

Every parent wrestles with this balance. Boundaries give children predictability, while exploration within those boundaries allows child-guided growth and development.

In this week's clip, I unpack how approaches like Montessori and play therapy show up in daily parenting.

Have you ever caught yourself wanting to keep your kids close because the world feels too risky to let them explore?

Most parents feel that pull, and it usually comes from a loving place. It might seem counterintuitive, but the research actually points in the opposite direction when it comes to keeping children safe.

In this week's clip, I talk about how practicing real-world skills changes the way a child shows up, and that might have a lot more to do with protecting kids than we think.

Safety and independence are not opposites.

Did you know that kids who have agency, who trust their instincts, and who feel a strong sense of belonging, are tougher to manipulate?

In this week's clip, I explain why the same qualities that help children thrive also work to protect them from would-be predators. Autonomy does more than build confidence, it helps keep kids safer.

Have you ever thought about the fact that the same things that help kids thrive also help keep them safer from harm?

I've been sitting with that connection all week. There is a well-established theory in psychology that lays out three things every person needs to flourish. Those same three things turn out to matter for abuse prevention too.

In this episode, I unpack what the research says and how it changes the way we think about parenting choices. The examples I share come from everyday moments, not clinical settings.

The link between thriving and safety is closer than most parents realize.

Ever wondered why a small kind moment lingers with you all day? In our latest episode of Out Here With Kids, I dig into the neurobiology of kindness and why it does as much for you as it does for the person you share a moment with.

Every small act of connection releases oxytocin and calms your nervous system. Kindness is not charity, it is mutual medicine.

I share why loneliness has become a real health crisis, how brief face-to-face moments still matter, and what it means to be an agent for your community. Choosing connection is a public health move.

Ever wonder why teenagers care so much about having the same clothes, the same water bottle, the same class as their friends?

It looks like peer pressure, but it goes deeper than that. Teenagers are wired to seek social safety at that stage of life.

When a teen feels safe and connected, the amygdala tells the nervous system to settle. Their executive functioning comes back online, and they can learn, focus, and stay calm.

Isolation flips the opposite switch in ways worth understanding.
