Melanoma may begin as a spot on the skin, but treatment decisions depend on what doctors learn after examining the tissue.
Pathology can show how deeply the melanoma grew and other features that help determine the appropriate surgery, staging, and follow-up care.
If the melanoma has features that call for additional treatment, specialists can determine whether options beyond surgery are appropriate.
If you notice a new or unusual growth or a mole that changes in size, shape, or color, have it evaluated.
A skin examination and, when needed, a biopsy are used to determine whether a suspicious area is melanoma.
