🤔If you have ever heard “he will catch up” from a grandmother, a coach and two doctors, you know how kind it sounds and how little it tells you.

One thing that helps is asking the people who love him how they grew.
- When did Dad get his growth spurt?
- Did Grandpa go through puberty late?
- Did an uncle shoot up well after his friends?
Families often carry a growth pattern in their stories, even when nobody wrote it down.

Write down what you hear, with the person’s name and roughly when it happened. It is a small piece of the puzzle, and clinicians find it useful. It does not replace measuring how your child is growing. It gives that measurement context.

Part of your son’s puberty timing may already be in your family.
The age his father and other relatives went through puberty can offer clues about his timing. Family history cannot predict a date.

In boys, puberty begins with testicular growth (gonadarche), not with a change in voice.

If embarrassment, worry or withdrawal persists for weeks, talk with his doctor.

Part of when her first period arrives may already be in your family.
In girls, the first period (menarche) usually comes about 2 to 3 years after breast budding (thelarche) begins. When her mother and older sisters got theirs can give you a rough idea of what to expect, but it never sets a date.

If sadness, worry or withdrawal last for weeks, talk with her doctor.

What an Abnormal Thyroid Result Can and Cannot Tell You

Parents often see the red arrow before they hear the explanation.

That matters because a laboratory flag shows that a result falls outside a reference range. It does not establish the cause, the diagnosis or the treatment.

TSH is a signal produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. It tells the thyroid how strongly it needs to work. To understand that signal, it must be interpreted with free T4, the child’s symptoms and examination, recent illness, prior testing and sometimes a repeat measurement.
An abnormal value should not be ignored.
It also should not be given a meaning it cannot carry by itself.

Educational information only. Please review your child’s individual results with their clinician.

I spend a lot of time talking about growth, puberty, and hormones. But medicine is only part of who I am.

I’m also a daughter, a sister, an aunt, Olivia’s mom, and a Colombian woman who rebuilt her medical career in another country.

Those parts of my life matter just as much to me as my medical training. They are also part of the person who shows up to care for patients every day. 🤍
