Six weeks after birth. Is that really enough?

A new nationwide survey found that 94% of mothers want routine, comprehensive postpartum care to continue for 6 to 12 months after birth.

For many mothers, recovery does not end at the six week checkup. Physical complications, pelvic floor concerns, breastfeeding challenges and mental health needs can continue long after those first weeks.

The good news? Changes to the way maternity care is paid for could create an opportunity to move beyond the traditional six week model and build more comprehensive, ongoing postpartum care.

Mothers have made their needs clear. Now healthcare systems, insurers and policymakers need to listen.

Postpartum care should follow the mother, not the calendar.

What if a hospital birth could feel less like a hospital experience?

In the 1970s, Gifford Medical Center in Vermont challenged the traditional delivery room model by creating a more comfortable, family centred birthing environment.

The idea was simple but powerful: changing the room could change the experience.

Expecting a baby or recently gave birth in South Dakota?

Understanding your rights, protections, and available support services can help ensure a safer and more supported pregnancy and early parenting journey.

In South Dakota, maternal and child health services are coordinated through the South Dakota State Department of Health, which oversee programmes aimed at improving maternal outcomes, reducing infant mortality, and expanding access to care.

Together, these systems reflect a growing commitment to supporting mothers and children through coordinated care, legal protections, and early intervention services.

Every family deserves access to safe, informed, and continuous care.
