What’s your favorite way to use fresh onions? 🧅 COMMENT BELOW!

1️⃣ Do you love them in your salads for that extra crunch? 2️⃣ Are they a must-have topping for your burgers or tacos? 3️⃣ Or maybe you have a unique recipe that makes onions the star of the show?

Comment below and feel free to add your go-to onion tips, recipes, or just tell us how you like to enjoy them below! 👇

In this study of 1,226 Australian women aged 70 and older found a significant reduction in atherosclerotic vascular disease (ASVD) deaths when consuming onions. Specifically, each additional 5 grams per day of allium vegetables, which includes onions, was associated with an 18% decrease in ASVD mortality risk. This highlights onions as a beneficial component to a heart-healthy diet.

Why may this be?

⭐️ Organosulfur compounds in allium vegetables, like onions, may help protect the heart in several ways. They may help reduce oxidative stress, lower inflammation in blood vessels, prevent blood clotting, and boost nitric oxide levels which protects arterial health.

⭐️ Expert tip: Quercetin and allicin, two bioactive cardioprotective compounds found in onions, are retained in the raw form and are easily destroyed with heat. Consider adding onions in the raw form by mixing them into dips like cucumber raita for a delicious, flavorful and heart healthy boost.

Which one surprises you the most? Comment below!

Atherosclerosis is a complex multifactorial disease and we must look at the entire picture in order to stop its progression.

⭐️ These conditions drive the atherosclerotic process due to blood vessel aggravation, inflammation, insulin resistance, and an increase in oxidative stress.

⭐️ We must control and manage these conditions effectively in order to slow and potentially stop the atherosclerotic process.

❤️ The good news is that science based nutrition can manage and control these conditions which means you can reduce your risk of plaque formation and heart disease related complications!

It is important to take a whole person approach to heart health and understand how these conditions correlate in order to address them appropriately to reduce your cardiovascular risk.

Work with an Registered Dietitian (RD) who can personalize the science to support you, integrate it into your busy lifestyle and explain the reasoning behind their recommendations so you can be an active, empowered and knowledge participant in your heart health.

⭐️ As a RD who specializes in heart disease, I thoroughly review my 1 on 1 clients medical records, blood tests, CT scans, echo reports, medications, and supplements PRIOR to meeting with them for our nutritional evaluation.

⭐️ We then meet over a 90 minute initial nutrition evaluation where I ask a lot of questions to comprehensively evaluate their nutrition and lifestyle to assess what is preventing them from reaching their goals. We talk about their lifestyle, stress, sleep, exercise details, nutrition pre and post exercise, nutrition timing, nutrition preferences, nutrition details, etc.

⭐️ This allows me to create a realistic, personalized and sustainable plan for them to meet their goals, optimize their heart health, and reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease.

A 56 year old physically active and fit gentleman came to see me because his coronary calcium score was high, putting him at very high risk for a cardiovascular event. He wanted to be as proactive as possible to reduce his risk of future cardiovascular issues.

His waist circumference and weight were within normal limits, and his lab results were generally normal. However, given his elevated risk, there was room for improvement in his levels. He was uncertain about what to eat and had removed many foods from his diet, which left him feeling hungry and fatigued throughout the day.

He enrolled in my VIP intensive program where we collaborated closely to incorporate therapeutic foods he was missing to help reduce inflammation, combat oxidative stress induced by high levels of physical activity, and improve his blood vessel lining and health.

⭐️ These are all goals centered around helping him prevent progression of atherosclerosis and stabilize current plaque formation given his high calcium score.

⭐️ In just 2 weeks he felt more confident and satisfied with his food choices. His blood pressure also significantly improved from an average of 125/85mmHg to average of 112/72mmHg with an optimal pulse pressure.

⭐️ After 6 months, all of his blood parameters improved: his LDL cholesterol decreased by 46 points (113mg/dL -> 67mg/dL), his apoB (plaque forming cholesterol) decreased by 19 points (92mg/dL —> 73mg/dL) and his inflammatory marker decreased by 1.2 points (hsCRP from 2.3 -> 1.1mg/dL).

⭐️ Most importantly after 4 months, he was nutrient sufficient, feeling satisfied with his meals, sustained high energy levels throughout the day, and felt like he could do this for the rest of his life.

He mentioned that both the 1 on 1 support and group support has taught him about science based nutrition in a different level he thought was possible and he is beyond grateful for this journey.

A frequent question I get is whether it's possible to decrease a calcium score through nutrition and lifestyle changes.

👉🏼 Watch this reel to understand how nutrition and lifestyle play a role in atherosclerosis.

👉🏼 Save it and share it with someone who may benefit!

When someone comes to see me with a calcium score above 0, as a cardiology dietitian, my goal is to focus on a nutrient sufficient diet that addresses several things:

1️⃣ Stabilizing the plaque already present in your arteries
2️⃣ Preventing further promotion of plaque
3️⃣ Reducing the overtaxing on the heart to allow it to optimally function to prevent heart failure, heart enlargement, and heart pumping complications.
4️⃣ Optimizing all the risk factors you may have, such as lowering LDL and non-HDL cholesterol, hs-CRP inflammation markers, insulin resistance, and waist circumference
5️⃣ Addressing the underlying root causes of heart disease, like inflammation, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, overweight or obesity, and plaque buildup.

Science based nutrition must be part of the heart health picture, especially to prevent future cardiovascular issues associated with atherosclerosis and plaque burden.

⛔️ There is no supplement that will remove plaque from your arteries safely, please do not buy into a scam.

❤️ I teach my clients the why and how behind science based nutrition so that they can protect their heart for the long term and be able to live a confident, anxiety-free, heart healthy long life with the people they love.

⭐️ I teach these principles and how to implement a truly nutrient sufficient, heart healthy diet in my 1 on 1 personalized programs and in my 6 week heart optimization group program.

I've seen a lot of confusion around high calcium scores—people receive this medical diagnosis and are left scratching their heads.

I recently asked my Instagram followers if they had any questions about a high calcium score, and many expressed uncertainty about whether they should get a calcium score and what it actually means. This confusion spans from those who've had a heart attack to those who are at risk and unsure of the extent.

👉🏼 Swipe through this carousel post for a basic introduction.

⭐️ If you think you might benefit from a calcium score, have a chat with your healthcare provider.

❤️ Getting a calcium score can help assess your risk, letting you take a proactive approach to prevent further plaque buildup and manage any existing plaque burden.

⭐️ I’ll be answering more questions about science-based nutrition and heart health in upcoming posts, stories, and with my email list.

08/01/2024

Aortic stenosis (AS) is a serious heart condition where the aortic valve becomes narrowed, making it difficult for the heart to pump blood effectively.

Early detection and management of risk factors are crucial for maintaining heart health and quality of life.

Risk Factors for Aortic Stenosis:
1️⃣ High Blood Pressure: Chronic high blood pressure strains the heart and can accelerate the narrowing of the aortic valve.
2️⃣ Diabetes: Diabetes contributes to vascular damage and inflammation, which can exacerbate valve calcification.
3️⃣ Kidney Disease: Renal impairment, especially an eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) of less than 30, is linked to a 56% increased risk of AS. While the exact mechanisms are unclear, changes in calcium/phosphate balance may play a role.
4️⃣ Obesity: Excess body fat, particularly around the abdomen, leads to systemic inflammation and increased pressure on the heart, which accelerates valve calcification and stiffening.
5️⃣ High Lipoprotein(a): Elevated levels of lipoprotein(a) are associated with increased risk of AS, and optimizing inflammation and oxidative stress may help.
6️⃣ Aortic Valve Calcification: The buildup of calcium deposits on the aortic valve is a direct contributor to the development and progression of AS.

⭐️ Managing these risk factors through lifestyle changes and science-based nutrition can help in preventing or slowing the progression of AS. For example, maintaining a healthy weight, managing blood pressure, diabetes, kidney health, inflammation and oxidative stress through diet and medical care can reduce the risk of AS.

⭐️ A nutrient focused, balanced diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods, low in excess salt, saturated fat, and sugar, and adequate in essential nutrients can support heart health and potentially mitigate risk factors for AS.

CLIENT SUCCESS STORY:

A 46-year-old woman came to me feeling frustrated and uncertain. Despite following a protocol from her functional medicine doctor, she wasn't achieving the desired results. With a history of open-heart surgery and a heart attack, she was concerned that her current plan might be compromising her heart health.

She joined my 1-on-1 VIP program, and during our evaluation, she shared that her functional medicine doctor’s approach had turned eating into a burdensome task. Her doctor had prescribed 15 supplements and advised a restrictive diet—low in amylose, low FODMAP, low starch, and low histamine - to “help her detox.”

⚠️ This regimen, unfortunately, led to malnutrition, inflammation, and other issues: she wasn’t urinating at night (a sign of kidney overload from the supplements), wasn’t sweating during intense workouts (despite being a competitive athlete), and experienced frequent loose stools (indicating malabsorption).

⭐️ We took a different approach: eliminating 11 of her supplements, replacing the remaining 3 with more suitable alternatives, and revamping her diet to INCLUDE nutrients she needed to address inflammation and oxidative stress she was experiencing.

⭐️ Within a few weeks, her bowel movements improved dramatically, becoming regular and well-formed, she resumed sweating during workouts, and her urination normalized. These are signs her body was naturally eliminating toxins.

⭐️ We also brought back the joy of eating again! She felt better, had more energy, and her heart health was protected.

❤️ We often are told what NOT to do and it DOES NOT work! We actually need to focus on what foods to INCLUDE for our body and heart to function optimally and thrive!

07/30/2024

In each heart disease risk factor and/or heart related condition, nutrient deficiencies may be present, impeding you from reaching your heart health goals.

For example:
Vitamin B6, B12 and folate can reduce levels of homocysteine which is associated with increased oxidative stress and may accelerate plaque formation in the arteries.

Poor heart function is linked to metabolic issues, including impaired energy production and high levels of reactive oxygen species. These problems lead to ATP depletion, meaning that the heart doesn't have enough energy to function properly.

Micronutrients (e.g., coenzyme Q10, zinc, copper, selenium, iron) are essential for efficient ATP production, yet up to 50% of heart failure patients are deficient in these nutrients.

While we need to limit certain foods in the diet, what we eat (in therapeutic volumes) is an essential component to optimal cellular, vascular, heart, and hormone functioning.

❤️ When we focus on nourishing the body with adequate (not too low and not too high) levels of vitamins and minerals THROUGH FOOD, we can protect our heart health, improve cardio-metabolic metrics and age gracefully.

07/29/2024

Many of my clients have food intolerances, allergies, or aversions. My aim is not to persuade them to eat these foods or to have them consume anything that might trigger an inflammatory response.

My goal is to make sure they recieve the necessary nutrients and therapuetic elements in their diet in adequate amounts while optimizing their heart health and their cardiovascular risk profile. This aproach takes into account their cultural, food, and dietary preferences as well as any intolerances.

⭐️ For instance, if someone avoids fermented dairy for whatever reason - I want to make sure they are consuming adequate (not too much and not too little) amounts of nutrients typically found in fermented dairy, such as calcium, magnesium, and probiotics.

❤️ Adequate calcium intake helps to regulate heart rhythm and blood clotting, while preventing calcium from leaching from the bones, which may increase the risk of vascular calcification.

❤️ Magnesium helps to support relaxation of blood vessels, and plays a role in improving insulin sensitivity.

❤️ Probiotics help to promote a balanced gut microbiome, which can influence cholesterol levels, reduce inflammation, and potentially lessen TMAO production by the liver.

⭐️ I recommend a foods-first approach because it offers more scientifically supported cardiovascular benefits, and our bodies digest, utilize, and metabolize whole foods more effectively, while also easing the burden on our kidneys and liver compared to supplements.

If someone is deficient or unable to get a nutrient through their diet, a supplement might be beneficial, but it should be tailored to their specific needs, considering their medical history, lab results, and current medications.

⚠️ Be cautious of any one-size-fits-all supplement recommendations!

👉🏼 Share this with someone who may benefit from knowing this - perhaps someone who avoids yogurt or kefir in their diet!

👋🏼 Hi! My name is Michelle and I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist who takes a science based approach to reduce your risk of heart attacks and heart related complications.

You can control your heart health no matter where you are in your heart health journey, and I am happy to help support you!

Science based nutrition addresses:

1️⃣ Nutrient deficiencies: We have seen that individuals who have these conditions are more at risk for several nutrient deficiencies. The nutrient varies based on the heart condition.

2️⃣ Improved blood flow, which is essential to protect all your organs from your kidneys to your brain to your heart!

3️⃣ Adding in therapeutic foods to allow for the heart to work more effectively.

4️⃣ Assist with heart beat regularity to reduce risk of blood clots and strokes.

5️⃣ Optimal blood vessel health: this is where it all takes place, we need to focus on this for each heart condition you may have.

6️⃣ The underlying root causes that contribute to these conditions and their progression. This includes underlying inflammation, insulin resistance, blood vessel lining dysfunction, etc.

7️⃣ Risk profile and labs to optimize them to help reduce the burden on the heart so it can recover and do its job more effectively.

⭐️ Science based nutrition should be coupled with medical implementation, as necessary, for optimal results.

07/19/2024

In this prospective cohort study of 5,452 individuals, selenium deficiency in non-smokers was associated with a 65% increased risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation (Afib).

Why may this be?

1️⃣ Selenium is crucial for heart cell function, affecting how mitochondria work and reducing oxidative stress, which are linked to Afib.

2️⃣ Selenium plays a crucial role in the regulation of thyroid hormones, and disturbances in thyroid hormone balance can contribute to the development of AFib.

3️⃣ Research shows severe selenium deficiency is associated with Keshan disease, a heart condition causing arrhythmias, and also raises the risk of atrial fibrillation after surgery, reflecting selenium's role in protecting heart cells from damage.

⭐️ The recommended daily allowance of selenium is 55mcg per day.

⭐️ Selenium is found in 1-2 Brazil nuts, chicken breast, shiitake mushrooms, tofu and seafood.

⚠️ Selenium toxicity can happen with excess intake and/or supplementation so it is best to focus on food first and in adequate levels (not too little and not too much). Selenium toxicity presents with symptoms such as gastrointestinal distress, neurological abnormalities, hair and nail changes, skin issues, respiratory problems, garlic breath odor, and bone and joint pain.
