Our flagship boutique in Manhattan's West Village specializes in Aromatics from the Natural World: essential oils and incense. We source most of our products ourselves from artisan distilleries around the world. We pay extraordinary attention to the quality and purity of our essential oils, to bring you the finest and most interesting, unusual and fabulously sparkling aromatics anywhere. The aroma is in the peel.

Bergamot oil is pressed from the peel, not distilled. Ours is cold-pressed from the peel of nearly ripe, certified-organic fruit grown in Calabria, southern Italy.

Its aroma is green and citrusy, with a sharp, mouth-watering bite. Sweet, fresh, warm and clean, yet rich.

It blends beautifully with frankincense, geranium, jasmine, lavender, rose and sandalwood.

Hydrosols are the aromatic waters produced during botanical distillation.

As the essential oil separates from the water, the water-soluble aromatic components remain in the hydrosol. Gentler than essential oils, hydrosols can be incorporated into skincare as a toner or cooling mist. Certain hydrosols, including Lavender Water, can also be used as a fresh linen spray.

Our name comes from enfleurage, a traditional method of capturing a flower’s aroma.

Fresh blossoms rest on a solid bed of plant-based fat spread within a frame called a chassis. The flowers are replaced daily as the fat absorbs their scent. No animal fat is used in our enfleurage process.

What does ""natural"" really mean? In aromatics, it is more than a word on a label.

For us, it means no synthetics added, no components taken out, and no cheap naturals added. It begins with the plant — flowers, leaves, peels, woods and resins — and the source matters: where it grows, who produces it, and how it is harvested, distilled or extracted.

We test our oils too, using labs that specialize in essential oils.

Every distillation gives you two things.

We simmer the plants, and their volatile parts come over and out together. The essential oil separates itself from the water, and what remains is the hydrosol.

Hydrosols are gentler than essential oils and mix easily with water. Use them as a toner after cleansing and before moisturizing. Keep one in the fridge to mist your face after a hot and annoying day in the city. Lavender Water can also be used as a fresh linen spray.

Our Rose Water is distilled in Bulgaria from certified-organic pink roses. Our Lavender Water comes from Washington State, our Chamomile Water from France, and our Frankincense Water is distilled by Trygve at our own distillery in Oman.

The best way to choose an oil is to smell it.

Every oil on the shelf is open to try. Take a strip, take your time, make notes if you like. Nobody will hurry you.

We've been on West 13th Street since 2011, and selling natural aromatics since 1997. Essential oils, absolutes, hydrosols, perfumes, incense and candles. All natural, never synthetic.

If you're not sure where to start, just ask. Our staff know these oils well.

Sanctuary is one of the first blends we ever made, put together in 1996 for a very simple reason — something you could shake onto your hands and breathe in.

Ylang ylang and chamomile at the front, patchouli and clary sage underneath, and a little black pepper running through the middle that nobody expects.

It works in a diffuser, but the palms are how it started.

Thirty years on, we still make it exactly the same way.

5ml, 10ml and 30ml, and there's a roll-on too.
